We're tracking Sporting Lisbon's Ricky van Wolfswinkel - Manchester United's Mike Phelan

Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant has revealed the Dutchman is a player who the club are monitoring and have been scouting for a sustained period of time
Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has admitted the club are monitoring the situation of Sporting Lisbon striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

The Dutch striker joined Sporting from Utrecht in the summer in a deal worth €5.4 million [£4.7m], and after a slow start to life at the Estadio de Alvalade, he has been in a rich vein of form, scoring six goals in the last six matches.

His efforts have reportedly drawn interest from Premier League club, with Manchester United and Liverpool believed to be frontrunners for the 22-year-old's signature.

"We have obviously known Van Wolfswinkel for a long time," Phelan told Record. "He is a young striker, very talented, who has been growing in the last few seasons.

"A club like Manchester United carefully follow many players all over the world."
