Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel happy with comeback from injury in victory over Exeter City

Slovakian defender delighted to be back in action following a frustrating period on the sidelines which saw him miss the first two Premier League games of the season

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is delighted to have made his first appearance of the season against Exeter in the League Cup as he steps up his recovery from a calf injury.

The Slovakian defender picked up the knock during the Reds pre-season which ruled him out of the first two games of the Premier League campaign against Sunderland and Arsenal.

However he’s now happy to be back in action after playing the full 90 minutes in the 3-1 victory at St James’ Park which sees his side move into the third round of the competition.

Skrtel is looking forward to challenging Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger for a place in Kenny Dalglish’s starting 11 after playing every game for the Merseysiders in the 2010-11 Premier League season.

"I really missed this," Skrtel wrote on his personal website.

"I am glad that we managed to secure our way through to the next round and personally, I am happy that the calf did not cause me any trouble whatsoever and that I could play the full 90 minutes.

"Hopefully it will stay like this."

The Slovak will hope to be part of the Liverpool squad which lines up against Owen Coyle’s Bolton Wanderers at Anfield on Saturday as the Reds look to extend their unbeaten start to the season.
