Arsenal target Per Mertesacker adamant over Werder Bremen stay

The German international has revealed he intends to remain at the Bundesliga side despite being linked with a switch to the Emirates
Per Mertesacker has insisted he will be staying with Werder Bremen amid speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger's side have been linked with the Germany international throughout the summer, along with Blackburn Rovers' Chris Samba and Bolton's Gary Cahill.

The 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday, twinned with a shortage at centre-back, may heighten Wenger's search for cover in defence but the 26-year-old dismissed a move to the Emirates following Werder Bremen's 5-3 win against Freiburg at the Weserstadion on Saturday.

"My plan is stay in Bremen," said Mertesacker.

"If you look at the [media] coverage it goes back and forth. No one really knows what is going on. But I know exactly, so I will stay in Bremen."
