Rio Ferdinand backing midfielder Tom Cleverley to be Old Trafford success

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has backed young midfielder Tom Cleverley to be a success for the club and also believes that the future is bright with the Old Trafford side's latest crop of youngsters.

Cleverley, who featured in last weeks victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield is expected to play a bigger part in the plans of manager Sir Alex Ferguson this season.

The youngster has enjoyed successful loan spells at Leicester, Watford and most recently, Premier League side Wigan.

"Not many people knew about Tom Cleverley before he came on in that game," Ferdinand told the club's official website.

"He was magnificent when he came on."

While Ferdinand was delighted with the performance of Cleverley, he is also aware of the bigger picture at the club and recognises that there is an abundance of young talent at Old Trafford.

Manager Ferguson has always looked to mix youngsters with a core of senior players and Ferdinand believes that the current crop of players will bring more success to Manchester.

"There are others too. Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans, Fabio, Rafael, David de Gea, Ben Amos, Anders Lindegaard... I could go on and on about the younger players. Mixed in with the experience we have, it all bodes well for the future," Ferdinand concluded.
