Official: Tottenham confirm signing of midfielder Steven Pienaar from Everton

South African joins Spurs ahead of Chelsea

Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar has completed his £3 million transfer to Tottenham after months of speculation.

Goal.com UK previously exclusively revealed that both Chelsea and Spurs were eyeing up a move for the South African, but the player confirmed earlier on Tuesday that White Hart Lane was to be his next destination.

The 28-year-old wrote on his Twitter account: "To end speculation I am going to Spurs. I've had brilliant years at Everton and it will always be a special place in my heart."

The club also confirmed the deal on Tuesday evening with a statement on the club's official website reading: "Steven Pienaar has joined Tottenham Hotspur.

"The South African midfielder has agreed terms with the north London club after Everton accepted a revised bid on Monday."

The Goodison Park club were reluctant to sell Pienaar in January, but they faced the problem of losing the midfielder for free in the summer with his contract expiring in June.

Pienaar initially joined Everton on loan from current Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund before making a permanent £2 million transfer during the summer of 2008.
