Lazio have reached an agreement to sign Manchester City's Roque Santa Cruz, according to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

The striker has been marginalised at the British club since Roberto Mancini took over from Mark Hughes, and has spent most of his time warming the bench for City.

Reports in Corriere now suggest his nightmare at Eastlands may be close to an end, as Lazio have agreed a fee to take the Paraguayan international to Rome.

The newspaper says the Serie A team must pay an initial loan fee of €300,000 (£256,000), with a possibility of signing him on a permanent deal for €3 million (£2.5 million) in June.

Apparently, City boss Mancini played a large part in instigating the move to Lazio, the place where he began his managerial career as an assistant coach before a two-year stint at the helm.

The Romans tried to sign Santa Cruz in the summer, but did not manage to secure a deal for the 29-year-old. But now that their initial target, Werder Bremen's Hugo Almeida, is to join Besiktas, the club have once again turned their attention to the out-of-favour Cruz.
