Chelsea and Manchester City are fighting for the same players as well as the Premier League as two clubs bid for the signatures of Edin Dzeko and David Luiz in the Janaury transfer market, according to the Daily Telegraph.
City have been continually linked with Wolfsburg forward Dzeko, who has made no secret of his desire to move to one of Europe’s elite clubs, while Chelsea are also thought to be interested.
The Blues are reportedly keen on classy Benfica defender Luiz, although City boss Roberto Mancini is also monitoring the situation. Both sides are looking to strengthen their squads in order to push hard for silverware domestically and on the European stage.
Target-man Dzeko has also attracted the interest of Juventus and Real Madrid, although many suitors have reportedly been put off by Wolfsburg’s £35 million demands.
It is believed that Dzeko’s most likely destination will be City, after a club source suggested a “decisive move” will be made this week, meaning a likely exit for strikers Roque Santa Cruz and Emmanuel Adebayor.
Despite Roman Abramovich’s best efforts to reduce spending at Chelsea, Carlo Ancelotti’s side's recent slump in form may force the owner’s hand. The west Londoners will be expected to pay around €30 million (£25.5 million) to secure the services of Brazilian Luiz, although City could swoop with a bigger offer.
