Blackburn Rovers striker Jason Roberts 'shocked' at Sam Allardyce dismissal

Grenada star didn't see sacking coming
Blackburn Rovers striker Jason Roberts has admitted that the surprise dismissal of Sam Allardyce has shocked the dressing room.

The club's new owners, the Venky’s Group, made the decision to remove Allardyce from the Ewood Park hotseat on Monday afternoon with the 56-year-old already being lined up as a replacement for Avram Grant at West Ham United, as exclusively revealed by Goal.com UK.

Allardyce was given his marching orders with Rovers despite the club sitting in 13th in the Premier League table, and Roberts admitted it had come out of the blue.

"I certainly didn't see this coming but we've got new owners and you're never 100 per cent sure of what's going to happen. I'm shocked by the decision but this is football," Roberts told Talksport.

"We've got new owners and there's a transfer window coming up and you never know what's going on behind the scenes, but I'm shocked."

Allardyce joined Rovers in 2008 and saved the club from relegation before guiding them to a top half finish last season, but the club’s new owners clearly felt that the former Bolton and Newcastle boss was not the man to lead the club forward in the future.

"When he came into the club we looked like we were going to get relegated and he took us to 10th, so you can't level too much criticism at him," Roberts added.

"Maybe at times it wasn't pleasing on the eye, but we're in the results business and we want to win football matches, that's the most important thing.

"Everyone has their own views on how the game should be played and it may not have been for the purists but we did okay doing it."

And even though Roberts had an indifferent relationship with his former manager, the striker admitted that he was still upset for him.

"Whatever the nature of my personal relationship with him I still tried my best for the team," he continued.

"Nobody's happy when they're not playing but I definitely wouldn't have wished this on him."
