Bongani Khumalo shelves financial career to make Tottenham move and rubbishes rags to riches tale

Defender claims to be middle class, only child
Tottenham new boy Bongani Khumalo has shelved a career in high finance and rubbished claims he comes from a poverty stricken, 15-child family.

Khumalo, 23, has agreed a pre-contract agreement to move to White Hart Lane in January from SuperSport United.

Stories had emerged that the powerful South Africa World Cup 2010 centre-back had come from a poor background but he moved quickly to dash the reports.

"What? I'm an only child. To say I have 14 siblings is a load of rubbish so I don't know where they got all that from," he was quoted as saying in The Sun.

"It's always been only me and I'll be coming to London on my own.

"My parents were academics. They've both passed away now but my dad was a lecturer who started the Swati African language department at the University of South Africa and my mother was a teacher.

"To say I'm from a poor background would be slightly unfair because I grew up in a middle-class family.

"As for my degree, It's been on hold. I should be going back now actually.

"If I can take a couple of modules to keep it going then I'll be happy but it has been on hold for way too long and I need to get back to it."
