Manchester United look poised to test the resolve of both Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich with bids for Gareth Bale and Franck Ribery, respectively, as the Glazers look to keep their promise to Wayne Rooney of providing a squad capable of challenging for honours.
Goal.com UK exclusively revealed on Saturday that Sir Alex Ferguson has been assured of a £50 million transfer kitty by the Glazer family, in addition to whatever he can make from player sales, and reports in The Sunday Mirror reiterate this, citing Bale and Ribery as the manager’s top targets.
It is thought that United's controversial owners, the Glazers, have given the go ahead for bids of around £22m for Bale and £30m for the Frenchman.
Bale, who has been in sensational form for Tottenham this season, burst onto the European scene in midweek with a wonderful hat-rick at the San Siro against Inter Milan in the Champions League.
That sparkling display by the Welsh international put some of the continent's biggest names on high alert, and Sir Alex is determined to maintain United's status as one of the main forces in world football by competing at the top end of the transfer market.
As for Ribery, Bayern Munich are adamant that their star man is going nowhere; but with the Old Trafford giants joining Real Madrid in monitoring his situation, a big offer could tempt the Bavarian side into rethinking their position.
