Chelsea are pondering a move for Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, according to a report from The Guardian.

The Blues' current number one Petr Cech is injured and back-up choices Henrique Hilario and Ross Turnbull have both looked a little uncertain during pre-season games.

Begovic, despite being a Bosnian by birth, would also qualify as a 'homegrown' player under the Premier League's new rules as he joined Portsmouth on a youth contract in 2003.

Now 23, Begovic has spent the requisite three years before his 21st birthday training at English academies.

Chelsea currently only have five homegrown players in their first team squad in the shape of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole, Michael Mancienne and Turnbull.

That means that they could play the first half of the season with only a 22-man squad, as the Premier League's new rules state that eight such 'homegrown' players must be in each 25-man squad.
