Lyon defender John Mensah set for second Sunderland loan spell

Ghana defender John Mensah is close to returning to Sunderland ahead of the new season according to his agent.

The 27-year-old spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light and was so impressive that Steve Bruce decided to bring the centre-half back to the Premier League side.

Mensah, who is contracted to French giants Lyon, has been plagued with niggling injuries which has persuaded Bruce to offer another loan deal rather than a permanent one.

Talks have been ongoing throughout the summer and have been delayed because of Mensah's participation for Ghana at the World Cup.

But Fabian Pivateau, the player's agent, says that a deal has almost reached its conclusion.

According to the Press Association, he said: "There are negotiations going on at the moment.

"I think everything will be finalised by the middle of next week."

Sunderland kick-off the new season at home to Birmingham City on August 14.
