Wenger confirms Arsenal star on brink of signing a new contract

The 29-year-old's current contract expires in 2017 but is agreed to commit to a new three-year deal until 2019
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Nacho Monreal is close to signing a new contract with Arsenal.

Goal understands that the left-back, whose current deal expires in 2017, will commit to new terms that will tie him to the club until 2019.

“We’ll announce that at some stage, when it’s finished,” said Wenger.

“It’s not over the line completely but we’re not far.”

Monreal joined Arsenal from Malaga in January 2013 and had been linked with a move to Athletic Bilbao last summer.

Goal understands that Bilbao would still be keen on a move for Monreal and retain a small hope of trying to sign the 29-year-old at the end of the season.
