Begovic to complete Chelsea move

The Bosnia-Herzegovina goalkeeper will join the Blues, while former Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson is set to complete his move to the Britannia Stadium

Mark Hughes has confirmed that goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is set to join Chelsea, while Glen Johnson is poised to move to Stoke City.

Goal revealed in June that the Blues had identified Begovic as a replacement for Petr Cech, who joined Arsenal last week, and Hughes has now confirmed that the deal is nearing completion.

"As far as I'm aware he's likely to travel to Chelsea and that will be concluded," he said.

Johnson, meanwhile, is a free agent after the expiry of his contract at Liverpool, having started just 15 Premier League games in 2014-15.

"Glen is a very experienced player and we feel the qualities he has will help us," Hughes told Sky Sports . "We're a team that is trying to progress and do that by getting good players into the squad.

"Glen has played at a high level for a very long time and we can benefit from that."

Hughes has also revealed that the club's attempts to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Inter have failed, with the club giving up hope of landing the Switzerland international.

"We expressed interest and put a bid in, but we needed to set a deadline, because we have other irons in fire," Hughes added.

"We've stepped aside and will move onto other things."
