Manchester United
have been in touch with super-agent Jorge Mendes over a possible move for Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi, but have been told the 26-year-old is not for sale.

Otamendi almost joined United before moving to Valencia from Porto in January last year, but the Red Devils pulled out of a deal and allowed the Spanish side to swoop for the former Velez Sarsfield centre-back.

The Argentina international was loaned out to Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro in 2014, but has become a fan favourite at Mestalla this term and scored the winner in his side's 2-1 win over Real Madrid earlier in January.

Signed prior to the investment of Singapore billionaire Peter Lim, Otamendi is now seen as the cornerstone of Valencia's exciting new project and United were told by Mendes there is no chance of a deal at the moment.

Manager Louis van Gaal is still seeking a strong central defender and Otamendi's aggressive style fits the bill for the Old Trafford outfit, but the Argentine's release clause stands at a prohibitive €50 million (£37.5m) and Valencia's new-found wealth means they have no need to sell.

Mendes, meanwhile, is keen to safeguard his working relationship with Lim which has seen several Gestifute clients move to Mestalla in recent times, including coach Nuno, midfielder Andre Gomes, forward Rodrigo and right-back Joao Cancelo.
