One of the stars of the World Cup, Paul the Octopus, has passed away after a short but successful career as a tipster.
As well as tipping Spain to beat the Netherlands in the final, Paul correctly predicted the outcome of seven games that Germany played during the tournament. This was an improvement on his previous record, having predicted four correct results during Euro 2008.
Following the tournament in South Africa, the octopus predicted that England will be the host nation of the 2018 World Cup, before he returned to his day job at the Sea Life Oberhausen Aquariuam in Germany.
"Management and staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre were devastated to discover that oracle octopus Paul, who achieved global renown during the recent World Cup, had passed away overnight," the aquarium said in a statement.
