World Cup 2010: Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard unsurprised by Argentina call up for winger Maxi Rodriguez

Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard has expressed his happiness at seeing fellow Liverpool midfielder Maxi Rodriguez called up to the World Cup 2010 tournament with Argentina.

Rodriguez, one of two Argentinians to represent Liverpool at this summer's World Cup tournament - the other being national side captain Javier Mascherano - scored two goals in Argentina's warm up game against Canada on May 24.

Gerrard believes his quality and movement could be imperative to any future success for Argentina.

"Maxi is a fantastic player," Gerrard told the club's official website.

"He's got good movement and as a footballer it's a pleasure to play with good players.

"That's what Maxi is. He is a fantastic player.

"He is an intelligent player and he can unlock defences."

Gerrard's compliments were echoed by Spain forward, and ex-Atletico Madrid team mate, Fernando Torres.

"Maxi is the kind of player that is always up to the challenge," Torres said.

"The more his team needs him, the more he offers.

"Maxi is hungry and when you have his hunger you can achieve anything."

Rodriguez made 17 appearances for Liverpool since his £1.5 million move to the Merseyside club in January, scoring one goal against Burnley at Turf Moor in the Premier League.
