TEAM NEWS: Gotze & Reus start for Germany against Faroe Islands

Joachim Low has opted for a change in formation for the visit of the Nordic minnows, with Per Mertesacker and Thomas Muller also returning to the starting line-up
Germany coach Joachim Low has announced a change of formation for his side's World Cup qualifying match against Faroe Islands, naming an extra playmaker instead of a deep-lying midfielder.

Bastian Schweinsteiger had not been called up to the squad due to a lack of fitness, and although Toni Kroos was expected to step into his shoes, he soon succumbed to a hip injury.

Rather than sticking with his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, Low has thrown Mario Gotze into the mix as an auxiliary attacker as they look to take the game to the Faroes and put a disappointing run of results behind them.

Elsewhere, Jerome Boateng has lost his place in the starting line-up, with Philipp Lahm reverting to right-back to replace him and Holger Badstuber slotting in on the opposite side of defence, due to Marcel Schmelzer's late foot injury, accommodating Per Mertesacker at centre-back alongside Mats Hummels.

Due to the prolonged absence of Mario Gomez with an ankle injury, Miroslav Klose continues up front as he chases down Gerd Muller's all-time scoring record for his country.

Finally, Manuel Neuer returns in goal after Ron-Robert Zieler failed to impress in his rare appearance against Argentina in August.

Germany (4-1-4-1): Neuer; Lahm, Mertesacker, Hummels, Badstuber; Khedira; Muller, Gotze, Ozil, Reus; Klose
