Udinese v Milan Live Commentary, 11/12/2021

1 - 1
Beto (17)
Z. Ibrahimović (90+2)
Dacia Arena

That concludes our commentary of the Serie A fixture between Udinese and Milan! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Udinese are back in action on Tuesday in a Coppa Italia tie against Crotone, before travelling to play Cagliari next Saturday. Milan have eight days before their next fixture - a crucial match at home against Napoli.
Ibrahimovic steals a point for Milan at the Dacia Arena and secures a late 1-1 draw with Udinese. The Rossoneri were unconvincing for most of the match as they failed to put any pressure on the Friulani defence, with route-one tactics to the striker rarely putting Becao and Nuytinck in any difficulty. It appeared that Beto’s 17th-minute strike after a turnover in midfield would be enough to secure temporary coach Cioffi a win in his first match in charge but Ibrahimovic was finally able to get the better of his marker, firing a delightfully acrobatic scissor-kick past Silvestri from close range in injury time. A red card to Success minutes before full-time meant the hosts ended the match with 10 men on the pitch as frustrations boiled over after what would have been a deserved victory slipped through the hands of the Bianconeri. The point puts Milan two ahead of Inter in second, while Udinese are 15th.
A. Florenzi
Yellow Card
90' + 5' Yellow Card Alessandro Florenzi
I. Success
Red Card
90' + 5' After the fracas is cleared up, the referee brandishes the red card and shows it to Success - leaving Udinese with 10 men for the remainder of the match.
90' + 4' A scrum breaks out after an Udinese corner as Success charges through Maignan, who had cleanly collected the delivery. It’s an extremely unnecessary body check which is followed by a melee that leaves Florenzi down on the ground as well.
Z. Ibrahimović
90' + 2' WHAT A GOAL FROM IBRAHIMOVIC! A cross comes into the penalty area from the right, which is met by both Nuytinck and Perez, popping it straight up into the air. The Sweden international meets the loose ball with an acrobatic scissor kick from behind Nuytinck - beating Silvestri from close range! 1-1!
90' The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added for stoppages.
M. Zeegelaar
Yellow Card
87' Yellow Card Marvin Zeegelaar
87' Hernandez bursts into the penalty area after a sloppy pass in midfield is cut out by Tonali, but the left-back gets his wires crossed and drives a very poor effort towards the back post that fails to either hit the target or find a team-mate.
85' Florenzi puts a cross into the penalty area from the left as the match becomes increasingly stretched, but Romagnoli’s standing backheel attempt is easily collected by Silvestri.
83' Becao has scored only two Serie A goals, both against Milan: in August 2019 he led Udinese to victory whilst in March 2021 he scored the first goal of the match, which was eventually drawn thanks to a 97th Kessié’s goal from the penalty spot.
D. Maldini
Brahim Díaz
81' Diaz is replaced with nine minutes left, as Maldini gets the chance to influence the result.
80' Hernandez plays it into the penalty area for Ibrahimovic but Nuytinck’s slightly unconvincing backwards header is enough to get it back to his goalkeeper.
78' Hernandez play as a Milan corner from the left into the penalty area but it’s beaten away by Beto - who is back to complete his defensive duty.
76' Walace is down with cramp as we enter the final quarter-hour - bringing the match to a temporary halt. He should be okay to continue but for the moment play is restarted without him as he limps off to receive treatment on the sideline.
74' Success plays Molina through on goal after a well-timed pass splits Hernandez and Romagnoli but the wing-back sends his shot over the crossbar disappointingly.
72' Messias plays a switch to the left for Hernandez - looking to get the left-back higher up the pitch. It’s a good idea from the substitute but it’s executed poorly as it rolls behind for a goal-kick.
M. Jajalo
T. Arslan
70' Jajalo is sent on for Arslan as Cioffi makes a change in midfield with 20 minutes remaining.
I. Success
70' Udinese answer with two substitutions of their own - the first of which sees Deulofeu replaced by Success.
Samu Castillejo
A. Saelemaekers
68' Castillejo comes on for Saelemaekers as Pioli continues to search for an answer.
67' Diaz has delivered an assist in his last two league matches: he has never had a hand in a goal in three Serie A matches in a row.
65' Deulofeu's cross from the free-kick finds Molina, who puts a free header on goal but fails to beat Maignan from 10 yards out.
64' Tonali catches Arslan and brings him down on the right wing, giving Udinese a chance to attack the Milan penalty area with a good delivery.
63' Hernandez’s clever disguised pass into the penalty area plays Kessie through but Nuytinck closes down the angle and blocks the eventual shot before winning his side a goal-kick.
M. Zeegelaar
D. Udogie
61' Udogie goes down holding the inside of his leg during a goal-kick as Udinese are forced into a change. Zeegelaar is chosen to play at wing-back with just under 30 minutes remaining.
59' Messias shows lovely skill to get past Udogie, skipping past the Udinese wing-back before centring it for Diaz on the edge of the area. It’s a poor left-footed effort from the second-striker, sending his chance well-wide of the goal.
57' Deulofeu wins a free-kick in midfield, winning his battle with Romagnoli, who was forced to hold the pacey forward in order to win the ball back. Udinese play the set-piece short - looking to get the match restarted quickly.
Yellow Card
55' Deulofeu is booked for protestation after giving away a foul. He appears to have dived into Romagnoli, who was in possession of the ball in midfield. The forward has too much to say to the referee and receives a yellow card for it.
54' A right-footed pass from Hernandez down the wing finds Diaz, who holds Walace off for as long as he can before going down before eventually succumbing to the pressure. It’s a cynical foul from the Udinese midfielder but he escapes without being booked.
52' Florenzi sends a long pass down the right flank and into the penalty area for Messias, who is beaten to the ball in the box by a diving Silvestri.
50' Deulofeu’s corner to Nuytinck is cleared away at the near post by Kessie, before it’s put behind for a second set-piece.
49' Deulofeu wins some space ahead of Romagnoli and chips a cross into the penalty area towards Beto, which is headed behind by Tomori for a corner.
47' CLOSE! Florenzi’s low cross from the right is dummied by Diaz for Ibrahimovic, who anticipates the movement and hits a first-time effort that flies just over Silvestri’s crossbar!
Junior Messias
R. Krunić
46' The final swap is an attacking one as Messias replaces Krunic.
F. Kessié
T. Bakayoko
46' Both starting midfielders are hauled off at half-time as Bakayoko doesn't return to the line-up either, making way for Kessie.
S. Tonali
I. Bennacer
46' Milan make three changes at half-time as they look to overturn the deficit. The first sees Tonali replace Bennacer in midfield.
Milan get the match restarted from the kick-off!
Despite a long injury list, Pioli still has a number of options to call upon from the bench to change the dynamic of the match. Both Kessie and Tonali could provide additional thrust from midfield - replacing a wholly ineffective Bakayoko, while Messias has been dangerous in his few opportunities for Milan. Udinese will more than likely look to continue using their low defensive block to their advantage when springing counter-attacks, which could require the presence of Success or Soppy as tired legs set in.
Udinese head into the half-time interval at the Dacia Arena ahead 1-0, thanks to Beto’s second-chance finish following a giveaway in midfield after just 17 minutes. It’s been a sloppy and sluggish first half from the league-leading Rossoneri, who failed to register any noteworthy chances until minutes from the break. Nuytinck and Becao have done their best to foil long balls to Ibrahimovic, while the pace and power combination of Deulofeu and Beto in attack have caused no end of trouble for Tomori and Romagnoli. It’s been a poor showing from Pioli’s team - who have been met by an eager and hungry Udinese.
45' The fourth official indicates one minute will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
43' DIAZ SENDS IT WIDE! Ibrahimovic’s first-time pass to Diaz inside the penalty area after an incisive Romagnoli delivery is met by an off-balance shot from the diminutive Spain international, who sends his shot the wrong side of the post.
41' Florenzi finds Saelemaekers on the edge of Udinese’s penalty area but Makengo sends the winger to the ground in a heap during a fair attempt to win the ball as the Friulani again foil Milan’s attack.
39' Deulofeu sends the delivery to the far post for Beto, who fails to hit the target as Maignan can collect the ball behind his net for a goal-kick.
38' Becao goes down under the weight of an Ibrahimovic challenge inside Milan’s half as Udinese win a free-kick within range for a cross.
36' Udinese are keeping the ball in Milan’s half, shifting it from left to right looking to free Deulofeu from Bennacer, who is marking him very tightly. Much to Beto’s display however the move ends in a goal-kick as the striker is unable to hold off Romagnoli and retain possession.
34' Udinese have drawn six of their 10 Serie A games since October, more than any other side in the competition: in the process, only Brighton and Hove Albion (seven) have drawn more than the Bianconeri in the Big-5 European Leagues.
32' Florenzi again looks for Ibrahimovic with an early cross but it’s put well above the head of the striker as Becao is able to collect the loose ball and start an attack from the back.
30' Walace plays a dangerous pass through the heart of the defence for Beto to latch on to but Maignan displays excellent anticipation - running out to the corner of the penalty area to get there first.
28' Molina has a strike at goal from a long way out after yet another Milan giveaway in midfield, which allows Deulofeu to bring Udinese forward on a counter-attack, beating three defenders on his way. Maignan makes a rather simple catch on the shot but it’s more worrying signs for Stefano Pioli.
26' Florenzi's free-kick from the right touchline goes all the way through the crowd of bodies to the far post but Ibrahimovic's square pass across the face of goal goes unmet.
N. Pérez
Yellow Card
24' Perez is shown a yellow card for bringing Ibrahimovic down from behind on the right wing.
23' Florenzi plays an early cross into the penalty area for Ibrahimovic but again Nuytinck is in the right position to influence the play - holding off the powerful forward which allows Silvestri to gather comfortably.
21' Diaz fires a low pass into Ibrahimovic, whose first touch is a lovely pass forward for Krunic. The winger looks to have a strike at goal but he stumbles before he could dispatch the shot - allowing Nuytinck to get it clear.
19' It’s Milan’s first conceded goal in more than 180 Serie A minutes but the Rossoneri will have to respond if they wish to put further distance between themselves and the chasing pack. The Rossoneri have failed to muster anything of note in attack - with Silvestri’s goal rarely troubled.
17' BETO MAKES IT 1-0 UDINESE! It’s a mistake in midfield which puts Milan to the sword as Bakayoko fails to hold off Arslan when receiving a pass from Bennacer - allowing Udinese to win the ball back. It’s immediately lumped forward for Beto who outmuscles two defenders and has a shot at goal which is saved - only for the forward to tap home the rebound! 1-0!
16' Bennacer appears to be dropping deep into midfield every time Milan are in possession, making it a three-man defence alongside Tomori and Romagnoli. This appears to be allowing Florenzi and Hernandez to press higher forward and act as auxiliary wingers.
14' Deulofeu cuts inside from the left and curls a lovely effort towards the far corner ahead of Bennacer - but the former Milan forward is unable to trouble Maignan.
12' IBRAHIMOVIC FIRES OVER! Florenzi plays a lovely pass over the top of the defence for the Sweden international, who remains onside after keeping in line with Nuytinck. The striker waits for the ball to come down and fires a powerful volley from 16 yards out but it fails to hit Silvestri’s net.
10' Romagnoli floats it forward for Hernandez, whose low cross into the area is put just behind the run of Ibrahimovic on the six-yard line.
8' CHANCE! The ball is launched long to Beto, who flicks it forward into the penalty area for Deulofeu. The forward gets to the ball ahead of both Calabria and Romagnoli but he’s unable to chip it past Maignan - giving Tomori a chance to clear the danger.
6' Udinese are finding it hard to keep the ball as Becao and Nuytinck are constantly forced to clear it long - allowing Tomori and Romagnoli to win it back easily. Cioffi’s side will be relying on rapid counter-attacks to break the deadlock, ceding possession almost entirely.
4' Tomori launches a pass from defence to the edge of the 18-yard box for Krunic, whose first touch is lovely but his layoff for Diaz leaves something to be desired - allowing the hosts to clear it easily.
2' Deulofeu looks to jink beyond Bennacer and into the penalty area but the Algeria international wins the ball cleanly before winning a free-kick on the right wing.
1' Udinese get the match underway from the kick-off!
Milan make three changes from the starting line-up that beat Salernitana 2-0 last weekend. Bennacer replaces Kessie in midfield while injuries to Rafael Leao and Pietro Pellegri results in starts for Krunic and Ibrahimovic.
Udinese make four changes from the XI that lost to Empoli on Monday. Becao and Nuytinck take up roles in defence replacing Samir and De Maio, while Molina is in for Soppy on the wing. The final switch is in attack, where Deulofeu partners Beto, allowing Cioffi to replace Success with Walace - a midfielder.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
Milan have the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table and go four points clear of cross-town rivals Inter, ahead of the Nerazzurri’s match against Cagliari tomorrow. The Rossoneri have earned back-to-back clean sheet victories since a 3-1 loss at Sassuolo two weeks ago and have good recent form against today’s opponents, winning three and drawing two of their last six meetings.
Gabriele Cioffi takes charge of Udinese for the first time after the sacking of Luca Gotti - who had only managed one win in his last thirteen matches in charge of the Friulani. Despite the poor results which sees them six points above the drop, the hosts have been an entertaining side for the most part - managing a highly enjoyable 4-4 draw with Lazio before playing their part in a 3-1 loss to Empoli in an enthralling tie five days ago.
