Commentary

That concludes our commentary of the Serie A fixture between Udinese and Inter! We hope you enjoyed it!
Udinese are back in action on Saturday away against Sassuolo. Inter will continue to chase the Scudetto on Saturday when they host Empoli.
Inter escape the Dacia Arena with a crucial 2-1 victory, with goals in the first half from Perisic and Martinez giving the Nerazzurri just enough of an advantage to see out the match. Inzaghi’s side looked to be cruising for the first 70 minutes but a Pussetto goal following a Deulofeu free-kick halved the deficit and created a nervy atmosphere in the closing stages. Vidal managed to put the ball in the back of the net with less than a quarter-hour remaining in the match but a careless offside prevented the visitors from reclaiming a two-goal advantage. It ultimately proved inconsequential as the Friulani failed to find the all-important equaliser but Cioffi should be pleased with how his side responded in the final 20 minutes of the match - after a rather listless start to the fixture. The win keeps Inter two points back of Milan with three games to go, while the loss keeps Udinese in 12th.
90' + 5' FULL-TIME: UDINESE 1-2 INTER.
90' + 3' The fourth official indicates five minutes will be added to the end of the match for stoppages.
M. Vecino
Yellow Card
90' + 1' A poor challenge from Vecino on Soppy earns the Inter midfielder a yellow card - just one minute after coming onto the pitch.
M. Vecino
N. Barella
90' It looked as though Perisic would be coming off for Gosens in the late stages but a concerning injury to Barella means that Inzaghi will be forced to use his last substitution on the influential midfielder - with Vecino coming on in his place. Barella is limping off the pitch with assistance and his knee looks quite badly swollen.
88' Udinese’s Udogie is the defender to have scored the most goals in the big five European Leagues in 2022 (4) and the youngest defender to have scored 4+ goals in the big five European leagues this season.
86' Samardzic’s corner is poorly taken, with Handanovic able to step off his line to make a comfortable catch.
84' Deulofeu gets forward and looks to link up with Pussetto but the combination of Darmian and D’Ambrosio coordinate well to close down the space.
82' After controlling the match for more than an hour, it appears as though we are set for a nervy final eight minutes, with Inter holding on to a narrow 2-1 lead. Udinese haven’t managed much in the game overall but they’ve certainly increased their intensity since halving the deficit.
M. Jajalo
R. Pereyra
79' Jajalo replaces the booked Pereyra for the final 10 minutes.
79' VIDAL SCORES BUT IT WON’T COUNT! Darmian slips a clever pass through the lines for Correa - setting Inter off on a rapid counter-attack. The forward squares a pass to the far post for Vidal, who finishes clinically but the Chile international was careless in his positioning - straying offside during the pass!
D. D'Ambrosio
F. Dimarco
77' A change in defence for the Nerazzurri sees D'Ambrosio come on for Dimarco.
76' Correa gets into the penalty area with his fresh legs taking him beyond Becao but Mari does well to close down the angle of the shot - forcing the Argentina international into a weak effort that fails to trouble Silvestri.
A. Vidal
R. Gagliardini
74' Vidal slots into the midfield as Inzaghi opts for a change in the middle of the park. Gagliardini is selected to make way.
A. Sánchez
Lautaro Martínez
74' Both strikers are hauled off as Martinez also comes off. Sanchez is his replacement.
J. Correa
E. Džeko
74' Inter make three substitutions at one time, with the first altering the attack. Correa comes on for Dzeko.
B. Soppy
N. Molina
73' Soppy comes on for Molina with less than 20 minutes remaining.
D. Udogie
Assist
72' Udogie's quick thinking gets him an assist on Pussetto's goal.
I. Pussetto
Goal
72' UDINESE GET BACK INTO THE MATCH! 2-1! Deulofeu steps up and takes a fantastic free-kick, forcing Handanovic to dive across his line to make a one-handed stop. The rebound falls to Udogie, who immediately puts a pass across the face of goal for Pussetto, who tucks home the easy finish!
71' Skriniar’s late challenge on Pussetto less than 25 yards from goal gives Udinese a chance to trouble Handanovic from a free-kick.
69' The only player in the current Udinese team to have scored against Inter in Serie A is Roberto Pereyra, who scored against the Nerazzurri with a penalty in May 2021 at the Giuseppe Meazza.
67' Dimarco’s inswinging corner is cleared easily by Perez at the near post, with Udinese managing to keep possession following the defensive action by the centre-back.
R. Pereyra
Yellow Card
65' Pereyra sticks out a leg and catches Barella from behind cynically - earning the midfielder a yellow card.
64' Martinez bursts into the penalty area and plays an early cross to the far post for Darmian but it’s turned behind by the covering Udogie.
62' Pussetto plays the ball out to the right for Molina but once again the wing-back fails to deliver an accurate cross to a team-mate, with his delivery nothing more than catching practice for Handanovic.
60' Dimarco takes another Inter corner but it’s hit beyond everyone and out of the penalty area on the other side for Barella to recover.
58' Perisic drives to the byline and cuts a pass back for Martinez, whose first-time shot towards goal is blocked bravely by Becao, who puts it behind for a corner.
56' A lovely passing move on the edge of Inter’s penalty area between Deulofeu and Samardzic gets Molina free on the right flank but a wild, volleyed cross from the wing-back flies over Handanovic’s crossbar harmlessly.
54' Dimarco’s corner into the six-yard box is nodded away by Becao but only as far as Brozovic on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder has a low hit towards goal but the crowd of bodies repel the effort.
52' Just as in the first half, Wallace receives the ball in a central position and steps into a pocket of space before lashing a powerful shot that flies narrowly wide of the post.
50' It seems as though Inter will sit back and hand the initiative to Udinese in the second half, soaking up pressure before hitting on the counter-attack. Capable of scoring goals in bunches as was seen in their 4-0 win over Fiorentina in midweek, the Friulani have been unable to manufacture anything of note so far.
48' Deulofeu’s ball into the penalty area falls in-between Pussetto and Samardzic, with Brozovic able to stab it away with a backheel poke.
46' Inter get the match restarted from the kick-off!
L. Samardžić
T. Arslan
46' A half-time change for Udinese sees Arslan replaced by Samardzic.
Hamstrung - literally and figuratively - by the enforced Success change, Cioffi will need to inject craft into his side in other ways as Udinese look to claw back from two goals down. Soppy’s pace could be an asset in the late stages as legs tire, while the progressive passing of Ballarini or Samardzic could help break down the defence. For Inter, it’ll be a case of hold what you have as the likes of D’Ambrosio and Vidal are likely entrants to help shore up the defence.
Inter take a two-goal advantage into the half-time interval at the Dacia Arena, with goals from Perisic and Martinez giving the Nerazzurri a lead with some insurance. In a must-win fixture after Milan’s earlier victory, Inzaghi’s side started the match with impressive calm and poise, taking just 12 minutes to find the back of the net after Perisic’s header from a Dimarco cross beat Silvestri at the near post. It was a relatively tight match otherwise, with the two packed midfields largely cancelling each other out. The visitors were given a chance to double their lead from out of nowhere however, after lovely build-up play put Dzeko in a position to be fouled by Mari - giving them a penalty. Martinez struck the base of the post but managed to tuck home the rebound, adding to Cioffi’s headache.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: UDINESE 0-2 INTER.
45' + 2' Perisic drives forward, taking Molina on with a couple of clever stepovers before stepping on the wing-back during a physical duel for the ball - giving away a free-kick.
45' The fourth official indicates three minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
43' The second goal before half-time will surely relieve the stress of the away supporters in the Dacia Arena, with Inter relatively untroubled in the first 45 minutes. There will need to be some reaction in the second half by the hosts if they wish to make it a contest.
41' There was an initial pause in play after the goal, just to ensure the goalkeeper had indeed got a slight touch to the ball - which would allow Martinez to play the rebound. Silvestri did make contact - meaning the goal is given as Inter are now two up.
Lautaro Martínez
Goal
39' MARTINEZ FINISHES AT THE SECOND ATTEMPT! 2-0! The striker sends his penalty off the base of the post and it comes back towards the Inter forward after taking a deflection off Silvestri, presenting him with a chance to neatly tuck home the rebound!
Lautaro Martínez
Penalty Miss
39' Martinez steps up and slams his penalty off the base of the post as the woodwork saves the day for the goalkeeper!
Pablo Marí
Yellow Card
38' After pointing to the spot, the referee goes over and shows Mari a yellow card for the challenge which has given Inter a penalty.
38' PENALTY! The referee comes back from viewing the incident on the monitor and promptly points to the spot! Can Inter double their advantage from 12 yards out?!
37' Play is now halted following the scrum in front of goal, with a VAR check going on for a potential penalty. There appears to be some debate as to whether Mari made contact with the ball or the man - which could provide Inter with a chance to double the lead from a spot-kick.
35' CHANCE! Martinez is played through on-goal after a clever Barella pass but Silvestri manages to get a touch to the striker’s attempted chipped finish to prevent it from going in. The ricochet takes the ball to the foot of Dzeko but a crunching Mari tackle blocks the follow-up effort and prevents a two-goal deficit!
33' Molina puts a cross into the penalty area from the right but Udogie’s weak contact makes for a simple save for Handanovic.
31' Udinese’s first real chance of the match ends in a free-kick for Inter as Deulofeu’s cleverly centred pass from the byline finds Pussetto, who fouls Skriniar during his attempt to get on the end of the delivery.
29' Udinese are enjoying a spell of possession but Molina’s foray down the right is halted by the combined presence of Perisic and Dimarco, who close down the space and force the Argentina international to turn back and play it towards his defence.
I. Pussetto
I. Success
27' Success’ match ends in disappointment as the forward comes off worse for wear after just 27 minutes with an apparent hamstring injury. Pussetto is selected as his replacement.
26' Handanovic puts the ball out for a throw as Success grabs his hamstring and goes down to the turf following a race with Dimarco for the loose ball. The striker seems to be in real pain and it’s unlikely he’ll be able to continue as he limps off for further treatment and gives a shake of the head.
24' De Vrij launches a long pass over the top of the defence for Martinez, who fails to direct his volley towards goal - though the linesman’s flag for offside saves the striker’s blushes.
22' Inter seem a lot more willing to settle down and pass the ball around, allowing their opponents to settle in defence around their 18-yard box. The goal has certainly given Inter the ability to mix up the tempo, though Inzaghi will be aware of his side’s need for a second goal.
20' Inter have won six of their last eight games against Udinese in Serie A (D2) and haven’t conceded goals in seven of these matches; the last win for Friulians was in December 2017, a 3-1 victory at Meazza Stadium with goals from Kevin Lasagna, Rodrigo De Paul and Antonin Barak.
18' Dimarco takes another Inter corner from the left looking to place the ball in a similar area but Becao learns his lesson and takes up a good position to clear the danger.
16' Brozovic takes a free-kick 40 yards from Udinese’s goal short, looking to restart play quickly but Inter’s passing triangles fail to open up any space as the ball is sent back to Handanovic to restart play.
14' Walace steps forward into a pocket of space in midfield and hammers a shot towards goal - forcing Handanovic into a full-stretch save!
F. Dimarco
Assist
12' Dimarco is credited with the assist as Inter edge ahead in the early stages of the match.
I. Perišić
Goal
12' INTER TAKE THE LEAD! 1-0! Dimarco swings a corner towards the edge of the six-yard box for Perisic, who leaps and tucks his header high into the top corner - beating the goalkeeper at his near post!
11' Dimarco’s corner from the right finds the head of Dzeko but Molina manages to turn it behind at the far post - giving Inter a second chance at a set-piece on the other side.
9' Mari comes across and slides through, putting a lovely and fair challenge in on Darmian on the right flank to halt Inter’s rapid counter-attack.
7' Martinez drives forward on the counter-attack with Dzeko to the left of him but his lazy and misplaced pass is far too easy for Mari to intercept on the edge of his own penalty area.
5' Inter will be charged with taking initiative, with their title hopes hanging in the balance. A win is necessary for the Nerazzurri and they’ll have to play that way - perhaps leaving gaps in behind for Udinese to exploit.
3' A mirroring of formations should provide for a somewhat congested affair, with both sides packing their midfields. The flanks will provide Inter and Udinese with the quickest route into attacking territory - though the recovery pace of both sets of wing-backs will be a concern.
1' Udinese get the match underway from the kick-off!
Inter make four changes from their shock 2-1 defeat at Bologna on Wednesday. Much to the relief of Inter supporters, Handanovic returns between the posts displacing Radu. Darmian takes over from Dumfries at right wing-back, while the unavailability of Hakan Calhanoglu leads to a start for Gagliardini. The final swap is in attack, where Dzeko replaces Correa.
Udinese make two changes from the XI that beat Fiorentina 4-0 last time out. Perez is in for Nuytinck in defence, while Pereyra replaces Makengo in midfield.
INTER SUBS: Arturo Vidal, Robin Gosens, Ionut Radu, Denzel Dumfries, Joaquin Correa, Alexis Sanchez, Matias Vecino, Danilo D’Ambrosio, Alex Cordaz, Andrea Ranocchia, Felipe Caicedo.
INTER XI (3-5-2): Samir Handanovic; Milan Skriniar, Stefan De Vrij, Federico Dimarco; Matteo Darmian, Nicolo Barella, Marcelo Brozovic, Roberto Gagliardini, Ivan Perisic; Lautaro Martinez, Edin Dzeko.
UDINESE SUBS: Manuel Gasparini, Ilija Nesterovski, Brandon Soppy, Daniele Padelli, Marvin Zeegelaar, Bram Nuytinck, Lazar Samardzic, Filip Benkovic, Ignacio Pussetto, Marco Ballarini, Mato Jajalo.
UDINESE XI (3-5-2-): Marco Silvestri; Nehuen Perez, Pablo Mari, Rodrigo Becao; Destiny Udogie, Roberto Pereyra, Walace, Tolgay Arslan, Nahuel Molina; Gerard Deulofeu, Isaac Success.
With 15 minutes to go until kick-off, let's take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
A thrilling match at San Siro earlier saw Milan beat Fiorentina 1-0, which will no doubt complicate matters for Simone Inzaghi’s side. Now five points back of the pace-setters after their shocking last-gasp defeat to Bologna earlier in the week, Inter will be forced to secure the three points today if they wish to remain within touching distance of their city rivals with three matches left.
A 4-0 mauling of Fiorentina on Wednesday halted a run of two-straight games without victory for Udinese, including a shock 1-0 loss to relegation-threatened Salernitana. Comfortably midtable, 12th-place Udinese find themselves almost equal points away from both European places and the drop, with three points separating them from Sassuolo in 11th.
Hello and welcome to our LIVE commentary of the Serie A fixture between Udinese and Inter!
