Real Madrid v Real Betis Live Commentary, 03/09/2022

2 - 1
Vinícius Júnior (9)
Rodrygo (65)
Sergio Canales (17)
Estadio Santiago Bernabéu

That's all from us, we hope you enjoyed the game. Until the next one, goodbye!
Real's victory means they're now the only team with a 100 per cent record to start the season - played four, won four. Betis remain a place below them in second having dropped points for the first time this season at the Bernabeu, and shouldn't be discouraged by being beaten by Los Blancos away from home. The champions have that title for a reason, and based on what we've seen so far this season, it's going to be one hell of a challenge to prevent them going back-to-back.
Vinicius' ninth-minute goal started the goalscoring early for the hosts, and the Brazilian's partnership with his captain Benzema was, as ever, enthralling to watch. Between them, the pair managed eight shots, six key passes and three crosses, with Vinicius having 12 touches in the box and Benzema passing 36 times in the final third. Dynamic duo.
The whistle goes, with that Rodrygo finish proving to be enough for Los Blancos to claim all three points! After a fast start to the second half by the hosts, Betis slowly grew back into the game and looked like testing Courtois with every attack. But, all that changed when Rodrygo stabbed home the winner, and Real were able to close out the result with little difficulty, and arguably could've won by a wider margin!
90' + 4' Willian Jose finds Ruibal with a floated pass across the box, but he's dispossessed and Courtois smothers it. He takes down Iglesias in the process though, but nothing is given!
90' + 3' Betis have shown they're capable of testing Courtois, but need to move the ball forward with more pace if they're to do so. It's been very sluggish at times, and Real will be in no hurry to attack themselves at this stage either.
A. Rüdiger
Dani Carvajal
Real Madrid
90' + 1' A late change for Madrid, as Carvajal comes off for Antonio Rudiger in defence.
90' We'll play an additional five minutes of added time to close out this game.
88' CHANCE!!! Ceballos' pressing forces Canales to find only Benzema with a pass out of defence, but the return ball from Vinicius is deflected behind for a corner!
87' Tchouameni has been excellent in the middle for Real, racking up more touches and passes than anyone else on the pitch, as well as engaging in 19 duels. He's also been mesmeric in defence, winning the ball seven times via seven tackles, four interceptions, and a clearance. Rock.
86' Another foul by Rodriguez, this time on Militao, earns Madrid another free-kick, and there's no sign of a yellow card for the Betis midfielder despite these repeated infringements.
85' Ceballos finds Tchouameni in midfield, but his effort is woeful and flies into the Bernabeu stands behind Silva's goal.
83' Valverde steps up to hit the free-kick, and shoots from long range, but a deflection off the wall takes the sting out of his finish and Silva can gather it.
82' A Betis attack breaks down and Valverde races away with the ball down the right. His cross-field pass to Benzema isn't the best, but Kroos is there too, but the substitute is fouled by Rodriguez.
T. Kroos
L. Modrić
Real Madrid
80' Modric is applauded off as he makes way, with the final 10 minutes to be played out by his long-time partner in the middle, Toni Kroos.
Dani Ceballos
Real Madrid
80' Rodrygo's close-range finish may well prove to be the winner in this game, but he comes off now for Dani Ceballos.
79' Play halts momentarily for the cooling break, as both sets of players head to the sideline.
77' After Mendy brings down Joaquin 30 yards from goal, Canales arcs the free-kick into the box, but Militao rises high to head it away for Los Blancos.
75' SAVED!!! Joaquin does well to fend off Militao before finding Canales. He tees up Rodriguez to shoot, and his dipping effort catches Courtois off guard and forces him to tip it around the post!
74' The momentum built by Betis before Rodrygo's goal has vanished entirely since Real went 2-1 up, it's been one way traffic for Madrid since, who look extremely capable of adding to their lead.
72' Willian Jose cuts inside from the left and tees up Rodriguez to shoot, but he can only blast his 25-yard effort well over the bar.
Willian José
A. Guardado
Real Betis
71' Guardado is also withdrawn for the visitors, with Willian Jose on in attack.
Real Betis
71' Juanmi is the next off for Betis, with 41-year-old veteran Joaquin taking his place.
Aitor Ruibal
Y. Sabaly
Real Betis
71' Manuel Pellegrini rings the changes for Betis, the first seeing Sabaly come off for Aitor Ruibal.
70' OFF THE WOODWORK!!! Modric floats a perfect pass to the far post, where Rodrygo's volley loops over Silva and comes back off the post!
69' Moreno is put into space down the left and looks to cut inside, but Carvajal arrives to dispossess him superbly and win it back for Madrid.
67' Just 69 seconds took place between Valverde coming onto the pitch and setting up that goal. Sudden.
F. Valverde
Real Madrid
65' Ancelotti has only just brought Valverde on of course, but what way to make your mark on the game! An inspired substitution, and the Uruguayan has turned this game back in Madrid's favour.
Real Madrid
65' GOOOOAAAALLLL!!!! What an impact!!! Valverde ghosts in behind Rodriguez to take Caravajal's pass, and with his first touch cuts the ball back from the byline to Rodrygo, who prods it beyond Silva from close range to make it 2-1 to Real Madrid!
F. Valverde
E. Camavinga
Real Madrid
63' Camavinga comes off in Madrid's first change, with Federico Valverde coming on for him in midfield.
62' BLOCKED!!! Excellent skill from Canales sees him beat Modric and play in Iglesias. He shoots from the right side of the box, but Militao flies across to block it behind for a corner!
61' OVER!!! After Vinicius picks Sabaly's pocket and races forward, he finds Tchouameni inside. He in turn plays in Rodrygo, who fires just over the bar from 30 yards!
59' Guardado slid in on Tchouameni to win the ball and end that attack started by Mendy, but injures himself in the process and requires treatment.
58' Mendy does superbly well to dispossess Henrique down the right, and surges forward with the ball to spark a counter-attack for the Madridstas.
56' Los Blancos race forward thanks to a brilliant piece of defending by Militao. Rodrygo comes forward with the box, and has Vinicius and Benzema ahead of him, but is clipped late by Felipe before he can pass and the hosts get the free-kick!
54' WIDE!!! Betis fly forward on the break after the corner falls to Canales. He crosses to Juanmi at the back post, who smashes a first-time volley just wide of the post!
54' WIDE!!! Modric shapes to pass, but moves onto his left foot, beating Guardado before firing the shot into the side netting! Silva got a touch, so it's a Merengues corner!
53' SAVED!!! Canales picks out Moreno down the left, and the Betis full-back shows his strength to hold off Militao, before snatching at a right-footed shot that Courtois is easily able to save!
52' Camavinga picks out Benzema running down the left, and he cuts across the box before attempting to find Modric, but Moreno intercepts for Betis.
51' Madrid have won their first three games of a season in La Liga for the sixth time in the 21st century, the previous time being in 2018-19. Los Blancos have gone on to win the title on five of the last seven occasions they have won their first four league games of the season, most recently in 2016-17.
49' SAVED!!! Juanmi does well to beat Camavinga to the ball, brings it down and smashes a half-volley goalwards, but it's straight at Courtois and the Belgian holds it!
49' OFF THE LINE!!! What a chance for Los Blancos!!! Rodrygo fires the ball across the face of goal, but a touch from Silva sees the ball hit Benzema's thigh, and Felipe gets back to clear it off the line for Betis!
47' CHANCE!!! Moreno loses out to Carvajal down the left, and he finds Benzema on the edge of the box. He could shoot, but attempts to lay off Camavinga, but in swipes Guardado to cut out the pass!
47' Rodrygo brings down a high ball and sets off towards the box, but loses possession following a good challenge from Felipe on the edge of the box!
46' Modric kicks off for Madrid, and we're back underway in this game!
We're back for the second half, and will either side be able to find a winner in this top-of-the-table clash?
Madrid have piled the attacks on Betis' goal since the visitors equalised, with Vinicius missing a great chance and Silva making a fine save. Ancelotti will demand more cutting edge from his team after the restart, though.
An enthralling half comes to an end. Madrid took an early lead through Vinicius' brilliantly taken goal, but a Courtois mistake allowed Canales to equalise for Betis.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: Real Madrid 1-1 Real Betis.
45' + 1' Just under 60 per cent possession for Madrid in the last 15 minutes, but still Betis stand firm. Three minutes stoppage time to be played.
44' Wow. What a dismal attempt that is! Alaba stepped up to take the free-kick but gets his shot all wrong, sending it high and wide away from the goal into the crowd.
42' More Madrid pressure results in Rodriguez tripping Rodrygo around 30 yards out from goal, in a central position.
39' Madrid really piling on the pressure now in the hope of making a breakthrough before the break. Carvajal floats in a free-kick from the right, but neither Benzema nor Militao can apply the finishing touch.
37' Rodrygo and Vinicius combine brilliantly to play in Benzema, but the striker can't quite take down a lobbed pass and the chances goes begging.
35' Betis are unbeaten in their last six LaLiga matches (W5 D1), keeping five clean sheets, including winning all three they have played in the current campaign. They have not started a top-flight season with four wins since 2011/12 (W4).
32' So far, Madrid have enjoyed the most success when capitalising on Betis' high line, drawing their visitors out and up the pitch before lofting a ball through for Vinicius to chase.
30' Betis coach Pellegrini has won just 15.8 per cent of his 19 games against Real Madrid in LaLiga (W3 D7 L9), his lowest percentage against the same opponent he has faced on at least three occasions in the competition.
28' It has been all Madrid since Betis' equaliser, but it remains 1-1.
Edgar González
Yellow Card
Real Betis
25' Gonzalez gets a booking for a foul on Carvajal.
24' Chance! Another great bit of work from Vinicius, who gets in down Madrid's left side and finds Benzema. His shot was headed for goal, but a defender gets a block in.
23' Madrid have not won any of their last five LaLiga home games against Betis (D3 L2) and could equal their worst winless run at home against the same opponent in the history of the competition (six against Valencia in March 1948 and Atletico Madrid in September 2018).
21' GREAT SAVE! Tchouameni is presented with a free header at the back post, but his looping effort does not beat Silva, who made a fantastic save up to his right.
19' WHAT A CHANCE! That should have been 2-1 to Madrid, and a second for Vinicius. He got on the end of Rodrygo's pass in the centre of the box, but could only blaze over from close range.
Borja Iglesias
Real Betis
17' That was brilliant hold up play from Iglesias, who was too strong for his marker and had the quality to lay it off to Canales.
Sergio Canales
Real Betis
17' GOALLLL!!! Well, that's the curse of the commentator, alright! Madrid looked extremely comfortable but Betis have hit back through former Madrid playmaker Canales. Iglesias flicks a throw-in back to the onrushing midfielder, whose low strike finds a way through Courtois. It's 1-1!
15' This, of course, is the first game Madrid have played at the fully refurbished Santiago Bernabeu. So far, Los Blancos are delivering for the fans in attendance.
13' Vinicius has been involved in three goals in his last two LaLiga games (three goals, one assist) – only Benzema (21) and Iago Aspas (17) have more goal involvements than the Brazilian in LaLiga in 2022 (16 - nine goals, seven assists).
Luiz Henrique
N. Fekir
Real Betis
11' Another blow for Betis, now, with Fekir having to make way with injury. Luiz Henrique is on in his place.
D. Alaba
Real Madrid
9' Alaba's pass was not just perfectly placed, it was also perfectly timed, with Vinicius holding his run just long enough to stay onside.
Vinícius Júnior
Real Madrid
9' GOAL! What a finish that is, and it's as simple as it comes for Madrid as Vinicius puts the hosts ahead. Alaba is given time to stroll out from defence and place a sublime pass over the top of Betis' line. Vinicius is simply too quick and, having just stayed onside, he gets beyond Gonzalez and lofts a sublime finish over Silva. It's 1-0 to Madrid.
7' Fekir wants a penalty after he gets in down the right side of Madrid's defence, but the replays clearly showed that the Betis attacker engineered contact with Carvajal.
5' Madrid have gone four LaLiga games in a row without losing against Betis (W2 D2), keeping a clean sheet in the last three (W1 D2).
3' Madrid enjoy some early possession, as they look to ease into proceedings.
1' KICK-OFF! This match is up and running.
The teams are out and we're just moments from kick-off in Madrid.
Likewise, there’s four changes for Betis. German Pezzella was sent off in their win over Girona and is replaced in defence by Felipe, while Guardado comes in for William Carvalho in midfield. Sabaly has replaced Ruibal at right-back, with Sanchez making way for Canales on the right wing.

However, they are going up against a team in Betis who also have a 100 per cent record so far this term. Manuel Pellegrini’s team won the Copa del Rey last season, and are sure to present a stern test at Santiago Bernabeu.
It has been a fine start to the season by Madrid, who have started the defence of their title with three straight wins.
