Commentary

That concludes our commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Real Madrid and Mallorca! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Real Madrid host Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday ahead of a derby against Atletico Madrid four days later. Mallorca are back in action on Saturday against Almeria.
Real Madrid manage to keep their perfect start to the season, overturning a deficit to beat Mallorca 2-1 despite the lack of Karim Benzema. Muriqi’s headed goal 10 minutes from the interval presented Real Madrid a real challenge, but Valverde’s stunning solo effort deep in injury time brought the score back level before the break. The second half would be largely dominated by Vinicius, who was at the heart of every Merengue move both at the inception and conclusion. He would not be denied for long, linking up with international team-mate Rodrygo to put a fantastic goal past Rajkovic, which would prove to seal the result. Late goals from the aforementioned Rodrygo and Rudiger added a bit of gloss to the result, with the emphatic win keeping Ancelotti’s side at the top of the table! Mallorca sit 13th after the loss.
90' + 5' FULL-TIME: REAL MADRID 4-1 MALLORCA.
T. Kroos
Assist
Real Madrid
90' + 3' Kroos picks up a late assist, finding Rudiger for Real Madrid's fourth.
A. Rüdiger
Goal
Real Madrid
90' + 3' RUDIGER MAKES IT FOUR! 4-1! Kroos dinks a free-kick from the right towards the back post, where it’s met by an unmarked Rudiger, who uses the side of his foot to volley the ball past the goalkeeper at his near side!
90' + 1' The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added to the end of the match for stoppages.
Dani Carvajal
Assist
Real Madrid
89' Carvajal's pass to Rodrygo will go down as the assist, though the Brazil international was still left with a lot of ground to cover.
Rodrygo
Goal
Real Madrid
89' IT’S THREE FOR REAL MADRID! 3-1! Another stunning solo goal for Real Madrid, with Rodrygo able to dribble between and through three separate defenders, leaving two on the turf in his wake as he coolly places his side-foot finish past Rajkovic!
Antonio Sánchez
Yellow Card
Mallorca
86' Navarro is also given a yellow card for his part in the two-man effort to stop Vinicius illegally.
M. Valjent
Yellow Card
Mallorca
86' Vinicius gets the fans on their feet with a number of clever stepovers and a bit of showmanship in front of two defenders to win a free-kick near Mallorca’s left corner flag. Kroos is standing over the set-piece, looking to take every second off the clock as Valjent is shown a yellow card for his cynical push on the Brazil international.
83' Grenier’s corner flies into the six-yard box but Courtois confidently steps off his line to make the two-handed catch.
D. Alaba
Yellow Card
Real Madrid
81' Alaba’s cynical tug on Grenier’s shirt earns him a yellow card.
80' Real Madrid are the only team with a 100% win rate in the big five European leagues this season (4/4). They will be looking to win their opening five league games for just the second time in the 21st Century, having previously done so in 2009/10.
L. Junior
Lee Kang-In
Mallorca
78' Lago gets 12 minutes to stretch his legs, taking Lee's position.
Abdón Prats
V. Muriqi
Mallorca
78' Muriqi makes his way off the pitch with Prats his replacement.
76' Baba holds onto possession well and looks to switch the play out to Maffeo but his overhit pass sails over the head of the wing-back and out for a Real Madrid throw-in.
74' Lee takes up possession of the ball on the left wing and immediately fires a cross into the 18-yard box for Muriqi but Courtois is quick off his line to make the catch.
Rodrygo
Assist
Real Madrid
72' Rodrygo's lovely mazy run and pass is the assist for Real Madrid's second goal of the day.
Vinícius Júnior
Goal
Real Madrid
72' REAL MADRID TAKE THE LEAD! 2-1! Rodrygo drives through midfield, riding challenges and evading tackles as he makes his way towards the penalty area before slipping a pass through for Vinicius. The Brazil international’s first touch takes him wide of goal before dispatching a lovely left-footed effort past Rajkovic!
Dani Carvajal
Lucas Vázquez
Real Madrid
71' Carvajal comes on as Real Madrid's final switch of the game, in for Vazquez.
E. Camavinga
Dani Ceballos
Real Madrid
69' Ancelotti throws Camavinga on with just over 20 minutes remaining - withdrawing Ceballos.
67' Alaba is tasked with taking the free-kick after Vazquez is fouled by Costa on the right wing but the Austria international sends his effort off the wall and away from the goal.
65' HOW HAVE MALLORCA NOT SCORED?! A throw-in from the visitors causes havoc as Grenier is allowed to dribble past two defenders and get into the penalty area before serving a pass to the penalty spot for Sanchez. The substitute gets on the end of it but somehow manages to steer his shot wide with the entire net gaping!
63' Lee looks to be in a spot of bother after losing a duel against Vazquez, with the midfielder apparently suffering from a bit of cramp. He’ll be able to continue after getting to his feet gingerly but there is action on the Mallorca bench.
61' Rodrygo is first to Alaba’s knockdown and drives towards the penalty area but an inch-perfect sliding tackle from Maffeo dispossesses the winger and allows Mallorca to clear.
Antonio Sánchez
Ruíz de Galarreta
Mallorca
59' Mallorca make another change in midfield, with Sanchez on for De Galarreta.
C. Grenier
Dani Rodríguez
Mallorca
59' An alteration in midfield sees Grenier take the place of Rodriguez.
L. Modrić
E. Hazard
Real Madrid
59' Hazard only features for an hour as Modric comes on in his place.
Nacho
F. Mendy
Real Madrid
59' Nacho is introduced for the booked Mendy.
57' It looks as though Mallorca are sitting back in a 5-4-1 when not in possession, with Muriqi the lone man at the top of the pitch for the visitors. Lee drops back into the left of midfield, often helping Costa with his industrious workrate.
55' Vinicius manages to get into the penalty area unmarked but his prodded pass across the face of goal fails to fall to Rodrygo, who had a defender on either side to prevent any goalward contact.
I. Baba
R. Battaglia
Mallorca
53' Confirmation of the enforced change as Battaglia will be unable to continue. Baba is his replacement.
52' Battaglia has gone down off the ball and is being looked at by the medical staff for the second time today. It doesn't appear as though he'll be able to continue, with Aguirre already preparing a substitute on the touchline.
50' Rudiger steps forward into midfield looking to take on the role of playmaker but his pass slipped forward for Rodrygo is intercepted by a sliding Nastasic.
48' An unselfish Hazard plays a pass into Vinicius instead of curling an effort himself but his selflessness goes unrewarded as the Brazil international is unable to corral the pass and complete the move - allowing Mallorca to clear.
46' Mallorca gets the match restarted from the kick-off!
The Hazard experiment is once again not working quite as well as hoped, with the forward a somewhat isolated figure despite Real Madrid’s constant attacks. Vinicius has played the role of creator often looking for the run of Rodrygo, which could prompt Ancelotti into bringing on either Mariano or Asensio should they still need a goal. A draw would be a good result for the visitors, who will no doubt look to remain compact and tight - with a substitution likely in the defence seeing as three out of five players have been booked.
A cagey and physical first half at the Santiago Bernabeu comes to a close with Real Madrid and Mallorca level with a goal apiece. The hosts dominated the ball, retaining more than 70 percent of the possession and firing an incredible 15 shots. Even still, it was Mallorca who registered the best chance until the opener, with Muriqi’s low effort saved by Courtois after just a minute. It would be the newly acquired striker who would eventually break the deadlock with a textbook far-post header, beating Courtois after evading Mendy’s marking. It looked as though the low block would pay dividends for the visitors but Valverde’s stunning goal with the final kick of the half brought Ancelotti’s side back level at the last gasp.
45' + 4' HALF-TIME: REAL MADRID 1-1 MALLORCA.
Dani Ceballos
Assist
Real Madrid
45' + 3' Ceballos is credited with the assist, though there was still a lot of work to do.
F. Valverde
Goal
Real Madrid
45' + 3' SENSATIONAL GOAL! 1-1! It’s a phenomenal equaliser from Valverde, who picks up a pass from Ceballos well inside his own half and drives forward, slaloming this way and that before cutting inside and unleashing a superb left-footed effort that finds the top corner!
45' + 2' Hazard goes down in the penalty area after a wrestling match with Battaglia but the referee sees nothing wrong as he tells both sides to continue playing.
45' The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
43' Real Madrid have won six home games in a row against Mallorca in LaLiga – the first time they had done so. The last time Mallorca avoided defeat away from home against Los Blancos in the competition was in May 2009 with Gregorio Manzano as coach (3-1).
41' Vinicius bursts forward and keeps two defenders on their toes before ultimately scooping a cross into the penalty area with his weaker left foot. The ball rolls for Rodrygo but a poor first touch takes it away from the winger and behind for a goal-kick.
Raíllo
Yellow Card
Mallorca
39' Vinicius goes over in the penalty area prompting claims for a penalty which are denied by the referee. Raillo then has something to say to the Brazil international, giving him a shove in the process. It's a yellow card for the Mallorca captain, but it won't be a spot-kick for the hosts.
37' Real Madrid’s task just got a little bit harder with less than 10 minutes to go in the half, despite the hosts looking the better and more in-control side so far. Without the presence of Benzema on the pitch to conjure a bit of magic, Ancelotti will need someone else to step up and shoulder the load.
F. Valverde
Yellow Card
Real Madrid
35' Valverde is shown the fourth yellow card of the half for a cynical sliding tackle on Maffeo - giving Mallorca a chance to test the Real Madrid defence from a set-piece.
Lee Kang-In
Assist
Mallorca
35' The little man supplies the big man as Lee's cross for Muriqi's goal is credited as the assist!
V. Muriqi
Goal
Mallorca
35' MALLORCA TAKE THE LEAD! 1-0! Muriqi continues his fine form with his third goal in four matches, meeting Lee’s free-kick at the far post and nodding an unmarked header past Courtois!
33' Battaglia is finally able to come back on the pitch after receiving treatment for about five minutes, with the combative central midfielder able to once again help his side break up play.
31' The referee takes this pause in play as an opportunity to signal for a water break, with both sides able to take on a bit of hydration and listen to instructions from their respective coaches.
29' Vazquez plays a pass forward into the penalty area for Valverde, who immediately pulls a pass back to the edge of the box. Ceballos connects well with the shot, sending his first-time effort crashing against the face of Battaglia, who immediately begins to receive medical attention.
27' CHANCE! Kroos plays a sublime pass from his own half over the top of the defence for Valverde inside the opposition’s penalty area. The Uruguay international chests it down for Rodrygo, who latches onto the ball and hits a low effort that stings the palms of the goalkeeper!
Pablo Maffeo
Yellow Card
Mallorca
25' Maffeo doesn’t manage to avoid punishment either, picking up a yellow card for his part in the affair.
F. Mendy
Yellow Card
Real Madrid
25' Mendy attempts to shield the ball under intense pressure from Maffeo, who pushes and presses the full-back. The France international cynically allows his opponent to run ahead of him before chopping at his legs - sending the Mallorca wing-back up into the air and crashing down. It’s a yellow for Mendy and deservedly so.
24' Mendy hoists a right-footed cross into the penalty area for Rodrygo, who is able to chest it down but he fails to control the ball effectively as Mallorca manage to scramble away the danger.
22' Vazquez plays a square pass to Kroos waiting just outside the 18-yard box but the shot fails to hit the target despite forcing Rajkovic into a full-stretch dive.
20' Rodrygo slaloms through the heart of midfield after winning the ball back from Battaglia and manages to get into Mallorca’s penalty area but his shot disappointingly sails over the crossbar.
18' Kroos and Alaba stand over the set-piece but it’s the former who clips it, sending his effort crashing off the wall and back out into midfield.
M. Nastasić
Yellow Card
Mallorca
16' Nastasic is shown the first yellow card of the match for catching the leg of Vazquez after his shot had already gone - giving Real Madrid a free-kick in a dangerous position.
14' A nifty Hazard backheel on the edge of the area gives Kroos the time and space necessary to dispatch a shot from 25 yards out, curling his effort just around the wrong side of the post.
12' Real Madrid look comfortable keeping the ball around the centre-circle, knocking it between Kroos and Ceballos as they look for a way through Mallorca’s low block. Combined with the exceedingly hot temperatures in the city of Madrid, it certainly won’t be a a match of high tempo and intensity.
10' Vinicius glides past both Maffeo and Valjent with trademark speed after latching onto Rudiger’s long pass out from defence but a poor touch near the six-yard box allows Rajkovic to burst off his line and smother the ball.
8' Valverde receives a pass from Vinicius on the edge of the penalty area and looks to chip it over the defence to complete the one-two move but Valjent rises above the Brazil international to scramble it away.
6' Ceballos wins an inch of room and fires a shot from just over 20 yards out, forcing a straightforward save out of Rajkovic.
4' Mallorca are packing their half when not in possession, keeping the midfield and defensive lines compact to deny Real Madrid any space to play. The hosts will have to link up in tight spaces if they wish to unlock the opposition, who have lined up with five at the back.
2' CHANCE! Muriqi tests Courtois within a minute, latching onto Maffeo’s long pass and getting the best of Mendy before firing a low shot that’s parried by an alert Courtois!
1' Mallorca get the match underway from the kick-off!
Mallorca make two changes from the XI that earned a 1-1 draw with Girona eight days ago. A swap at centre-back sees Nastasic preferred over Copete, while De Galaretta takes Sanchez’s place in midfield.
Ancelotti makes six alterations to the Real Madrid side that beat Real Betis 2-1 last weekend. An injury to Eder Militao sees Rudiger take his place in defence, while Vazquez is preferred over Carvajal at right-back. Wholesale changes in midfield see Ceballos, Kroos and Valverde replace Modric, Tchouameni and Camavinga while a knock to star striker Karim Benzema means Hazard is chosen to fill the void.
MALLORCA SUBS: Giovanni Gonzalez, Copete, Antonio Sanchez, Lago Junior, Leo Roman, Iddrisu Baba, Braian Cufre, Franco Russo, Javi Llabres, Clement Grenier, Angel Rodriguez, Abdon Prats.
MALLORCA XI (5-3-2): Predrag Rajkovic; Pablo Maffeo, Martin Valjent, Antonio Raillo, Matija Nastasic, Jaume Costa; Inigo Ruiz De Galaretta, Rodrigo Battaglia, Dani Rodriguez; Kang-In Lee, Vedat Muriqi.
REAL MADRID SUBS: Eduardo Camavinga, Nacho, Dani Carvajal, Marco Asensio, Mariano, Jesus Vallejo, Aurelien Tchouameni, Andriy Lunin, Luka Modric, Luis Lopez.
REAL MADRID XI (4-3-3): Thibaut Courtois; Ferland Mendy, David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger, Lucas Vazquez; Dani Ceballos, Toni Kroos, Federico Valverde; Vinicius Junior, Eden Hazard, Rodrygo.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
Mallorca have been a tough out to start the year, earning draws away against Athletic Bilbao and home against Girona while also notching a loss and a win in-between. Newly acquired striker Vedat Muriqi seems to have hit the ground running for his new side netting twice in his last three starts - a real boon for the side that finished last season with the third-fewest goals scored.
Barcelona’s emphatic win yesterday gave the Blaugrana top spot overnight but Real Madrid can wrestle it back with a win today against Mallorca - a result that would preserve Carlo Ancelotti’s perfect start to the season both domestically and in Europe. Without talisman Karim Benzema it’s going to be an awkward test for the hosts, who will be forced to test the depth of their squad.
