The Buccaneers put their recent troubles behind them with a 2-1 PSL victory over the Chilli Boys on Saturday

Tshegofatso Mabasa scored twice as Orlando Pirates defeated Chippa United 2-1 on Saturday to put their recent misery behind them and end their three-match winless run in the league.

The Buccaneers have endured a testing start to the season, falling at the first hurdle in the Caf Champions League while failing to win in the PSL since their opening-day victory over Bloemfontain Celtic.

However, they put their troubles to one side to see off the Chilli Boys and win their first win in seven, with Mabasa’s quick-fire double taking them up to eight points after five matches.

The 22-year-old opened the scoring in the 55th minute with a fine finish, rewarding the faith shown in him by Bucs caretaker coach Rulani Mokwena, before adding a second five minutes later from close-range after substitute Thabiso Monyane’s delightful cross.

Chippa responded through Lerato Manzini's tap-in 11 minutes from time, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Mokwena from winning his first match in charge.

It was a frustrating first 45 minutes, with Pirates showing the greater initiative through Fortune Makaringe and Siphesihle Ndlovu, who went close before the interval.

However, United showed qualities of their own in the build-up play, only to be let down by their finishing, as Pirates debutant Joris Delle largely went untested, save for a late block to deny Rhulani Manzini a late equaliser.

Thembinkosi Lorch, returning to the side after missing the Golden Arrows match, missed a chance to kill off the contest late on, while Mabasa could have completed his hat-trick during the second period.

Chippa remain on three points after five matches, and are yet to pick up their first win of the campaign.

Pirates are next in action when they face Bidvest Wits away on Saturday, while Chippa United host Celtic.
