UEFA Champions League
UEFA Europa League
UEFA Conference League Qualifiers

That concludes our commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Espanyol and Atletico Madrid! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Espanyol are back in action next Sunday when they travel to face Real Betis. Atletico Madrid host Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday before welcoming Athletic Bilbao to the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday
For the second match in a row, Atleti leave it late, this time with Lemar scoring a 99th-minute winner to seal the unlikeliest of comebacks! De Tomas got the match going with a brilliant glancing header after 40 minutes, but Carrasco’s individual brilliance inside the area pulled one back for the champions with just over 10 minutes to go. As the match wore on the visitors piled more and more pressure onto their hosts, with Moreno’s side happy to defend their 18-yard box. Lemar, who was denied an earlier goal for offside in the build-up was looking to make amends, scoring after a wonderful charging run that featured a lovely Carrasco backheel. The win puts Atleti back on top, while Espanyol sit in 16th.
João Félix
Yellow Card
90' + 11' The referee doesn’t take sides and books them both for the late melee.
Nico Melamed
Yellow Card
90' + 11' It’s a late booking for Melamed, who gets into a bit of a scrap with Felix.
Y. Carrasco
90' + 9' Carrasco's brilliant backheel is the assist for Atleti's winner!
T. Lemar
90' + 9' LEMAR WINS IT IN THE 99TH MINUTE! The substitute passes it into the penalty area for Carrasco, whose clever backheel flick allows Lemar to continue his run before firing a left-footed strike towards goal. Lopez gets two hands to the shot but can only parry it back into his own goal! 2-1 Atleti!
Y. Carrasco
Yellow Card
90' + 8' Carrasco puts a bad tackle on Melemed, stepping on his ankles during an attempt to win the ball. It’s a late booking for the winger and goal scorer.
90' + 6' Atletico Madrid have kept only one clean sheet in their last six LaLiga games (W5 D1), 1-0 vs Elche, after doing so in six of their previous nine matches in the competition (W4 D3 L2).
90' + 4' CARRASCO PULLS IT WIDE! The winger gets into a one-against-one with Pedrosa inside the penalty area on the right-hand side and shifts to open space before firing a low shot between the defender’s legs - sending his effort narrowly wide of the far post!
90' + 2' The fourth official holds up the board and signals for an additional 10 minutes to be played at the end of the 90.
90' CLOSE! Lodi drives into the penalty area and drags Lopez off his line, before squaring a pass into the middle for Cunha. It’s put just behind the substitute striker, allowing Cabrera to clear it from two yards in front of his own open net.
88' Embarba fires the ensuing corner into the six-yard box, where Oblak claims it confidently with two gloves.
87' Embarba goes for goal from a free-kick on the left, but Felix is well-placed in the wall to make a block and send it behind for a corner.
85' Savic displays some great last-ditch defending to turn Darder’s dangerous cross behind from a sliding position, facing his own goal. It’s a corner for Espanyol, who are pushing for the three points.
L. Dimata
Raúl de Tomás
83' De Tomas' goal could still possibly earn his side a point - but he won't get a chance for a second as Dimata replaces him with seven minutes left.
G. Kondogbia
Yellow Card
82' Kondogbia loses possession and uses too much force on Darder to win it back, resulting in a yellow card for the Atleti substitute.
81' Espanyol have failed to win in their last 13 LaLiga games (D4 L9) and could equal their second-longest winless run in the competition - 14 games between November 2008 and February 2009 (W0 D6 L8).
Y. Carrasco
79' CARRASCO GETS THE EQUALISER! It’s an amazing goal from the winger, who keeps possession inside the penalty area despite immediate pressure from four Espanyol defenders, twisting and turning to beat each man in turn before slotting his shot coolly past Lopez! 1-1!
77' The referee again blows his whistle and points to the touchline with just under 15 minutes left to go, as the two sides are given a hydration break.
Nico Melamed
Aleix Vidal
75' Melamed is sent on for Vidal as Espanyol look to secure the three points.
73' Felipe is down inside Espanyol’s penalty area after falling extremely hard on his back during a duel with Cabrera. The defender should be okay after a bit of treatment but the impact was quite severe, landing squarely on his lower neck.
Matheus Cunha
L. Suárez
71' Confirmation of the change as Suarez will play no further part in the match. Cunha is his replacement.
70' Suarez has been limping for some time at the top of the pitch. With one switch remaining, it’s likely that the striker is withdrawn despite the deficit, as Atleti are also involved in the Champions League in midweek.
68' Espanyol are determined to defend around their own 18-yard box and challenge Atleti to break them down. The only breakdown however is in communication as Koke prods a pass down the right too far for Llorente - going out for a goal-kick instead.
66' Koke and Felix get in each other’s way as Lodi’s cross comes in from the left, allowing for an easy clearance for Embarba, who wins a free-kick on his way from the Espanyol penalty area.
64' Llorente’s cross from the right is met by an audacious scorpion-kick attempt from Felix, but the forward can't quite turn his improvisational strike towards goal - sending it wide of the post.
62' Recasens hasn’t been given an easy task in his Espanyol senior debut; he’s got the unenviable job of marking Suarez. It’s a trial by fire but one that could do wonders for his confidence should he succeed.
60' An Espanyol corner from the left is swung into the near post by Embarba, but Atleti have learned their lesson as it’s cleared immediately.
K. Bare
Manu Morlanes
58' Substitution Manuel Morlanes Ariño Keidi Bare
Loren Morón
Óscar Melendo
58' Bare replaces Melendo as Espanyol make a change just before the hour.
João Félix
A. Griezmann
58' The lengthy review, as well as the decision it has produced, has prompted Simeone into another change. Griezmann’s match is over as Felix is sent on to replace him.
57' It's a tight decision in the end for the referee, who had to judge whether or not Suarez was impeding Recasens' ability to make a clearance on the cross. His inability to do so led to the Lemar finish and left the referee confident in his decision.
55' Espanyol have won three of their last six LaLiga games against Atletico (D1 L2), after winning one of their previous 11 matches against them in the competition (D2 L8).
53' LEMAR SCORES BUT VAR CHALKS IT OFF! Llorente’s first-time cross from a Griezmann pass is sent into the penalty area for Suarez, who - despite sliding - is unable to reach the delivery. Lemar gets onto it at the far post and tucks it home but after an official review, it appears as though Suarez was in an offside position and interfering with the defender, who could have made a clearance. It’s up to the referee in the end after viewing the pictures and he decides no goal.
51' Lemar cuts inside from the right in trademark fashion and looks to curl an off-balance strike into the far corner, but the substitute narrowly misses the frame of the goal as Atleti continue to search for an equaliser.
49' Lemar’s corner is swung in from the left but again De Tomas is back to do the defensive work, clearing the ball at the first time of asking.
48' An Atletico Madrid free-kick from deep in midfield is worked to the left wing, where Carrasco is able to deliver a cross but it’s blocked out for a throw immediately by De Tomas.
46' Atletico Madrid get the second half underway from the kick-off!
Lluis Recasens
Fernando Calero
46' Confirmation of the enforced change as Calero is no longer able to continue. On for his debut is 19-year old academy graduate Recasens.
Renan Lodi
Á. Correa
46' Correa won't get a chance to add to his goal tally in the second as he's withdrawn for Lodi.
T. Lemar
K. Trippier
46' Trippier is replaced by Lemar as Simeone makes wholesale changes at the half.
G. Kondogbia
46' A flurry of action at half-time sees three substitutions made. The first sees Kondogbia sent on to replace Hermoso - who was booked in the first half.
Despite a poor showing from the XI on the pitch, Atletico are still spoiled for choice with a number of difference-making players available from the substitute’s bench. Joao Felix or new signing Cunha could sharpen their steel in front of goal, while the lines of Lemar or De Paul could play the incisive pass that was so often lacking in the first. For Espanyol, they will be hoping that Calero is able to continue despite a potential knock in the first, though Recasens could be sent on to replace him. Caught between two minds, will Moreno sit back and hope to squeak out a 1-0 win, or will a bit of insurance be on agenda?
An enjoyable first half at RCDE stadium comes to an end with an unlikely scoreline, as hosts Espanyol take a deserved 1-0 lead into the interval. It’s a similar story for Atletico, who looked to struggle under the weight of expectation and possession - working hard without breaking down a well-organised Espanyol defence. The defence was lax from the off, with Savic and Oblak almost combining to allow an Embarba goal just five minutes into the match after a miscommunication. Griezmann has shown little on his second debut, while Suarez and Correa fail to link up effectively. The hosts were bright in possession, with Vidal and Embarba using their pace to terrorise the wing-backs and work space for the clinical De Tomas.
45' + 1' The fourth official indicates three minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
44' Trippier’s cross from the right finds the head of Suarez, who can only loop it up straight into the air. The striker looks to get onto the second ball and challenge the goalkeeper, but Lopez has the time to step off his line and claim it.
42' With under five minutes left in the half, it’s going to take considerable effort if Atleti want to pull themselves level. It won’t be a kind team-talk from Simeone at the interval, as the coach has looked thoroughly displeased with what he’s seen for the majority of the 45 minutes - changing shape two or three times in that span to try and make something work.
Adri Embarba
40' Embarba, who won the corner with his tremendous shot - is credited with the assist as he also took the ensuing set-piece.
Raúl de Tomás
40' ESPANYOL TAKE THE LEAD! 1-0 TO THE HOSTS! Embarba’s corner is swung in from the left to the near post for De Tomas, whose textbook glancing header beats Oblak and nestles into the far corner!
39' WHAT A STRIKE FROM EMBARBA! The winger picks the ball up on the left before cutting inside and smashing a rocket of a shot which continues rising - forcing Oblak to leap into action to parry it over the crossbar.
38' Carrasco looks to combine with Griezmann down the left-hand side in an attempt to put Gil under pressure, but the winger is unable to find the France international - sending his pass rolling past the byline and out for a goal-kick in disappointing fashion.
36' An Espanyol free-kick from the right is taken short to Embarba, who is allowed to fire a cross into the penalty area with time and space. Cabrera gets to the ball first but it’s a poor header - sent looping over the bar.
34' With just over 10 minutes left in the half the referee blows his whistle and points to the touchline, indicating a water break for both sides. It’s an extremely hot day in Barcelona, with sun bathing the entirety of the pitch except for Oblak’s penalty area - which will be a relief for the veteran goalkeeper.
32' Embarba takes the free-kick but it’s a poor delivery which Suarez is able to deal with very comfortably ahead of the near post.
Yellow Card
31' Atletico Madrid make another mistake in defence as Hermoso steps into a challenge late, catching the heel of Vidal with his studs. It’s a yellow card for the centre-back, formerly of Espanyol.
29' Espanyol have Recasens warming up on the touchline, which isn’t a promising sign for the hosts. Calero has had injury problems recently and is playing with taping around his leg so it could be a problem for the centre-back.
27' A good ball in from Melendo finds Embarba 18 yards from goal, but the winger is unable to turn under pressure from Hermoso - giving Atletico Madrid possession cheaply.
25' Another long spell of possession looks to be fruitless for Atleti, who move it from Carrasco on the left to Trippier on the right looking for somewhere - anywhere - to fashion a real chance. It’s been tough going so far for the champions as we approach the half-hour mark.
22' CLOSE! An inventive try from Suarez, whose first touch lets him down after Correa’s chipped pass so he attempts a looping half-volley hit with his laces. It sends the goalkeeper retreating in caution but the effort is put just over the crossbar.
20' Atletico have been unusually shaky in defence in the opening 20 minutes, with Savic’s earlier error not the only time the rearguard have looked beatable. Simeone’s side is one built from the back and they will no doubt need that solidity in what is shaping up to be a tight contest.
18' CLEARED OFF THE LINE BUT HE’S OFFSIDE! A ball hit over the top from Cabrera puts De Tomas inside the penalty area after the striker takes it down with confidence, beating Hermoso in the process. The striker looks to round Oblak and put it into the empty net but Felipe whacks it off the goal line, only for the fourth official to raise his flag for offside in the build-up; it wouldn’t have counted anyway.
16' A well-worked triangle on the right provides space for Vidal to burst into, which he does with tenacity before firing a low cross into the box. Melendo is in the right spot and swivels to hit his shot at Oblak but it's a poor effort.
14' Atleti have changed their shape as well, with Griezmann and Correa playing narrow behind Suarez on either side. Llorente and Koke are patrolling midfield while Trippier and Carrasco play their familiar roles on the wings.
12' Atleti camp all 10 outfield players inside Espanyol’s half as they continue to look for a way to break down the defence. Carrasco and Suarez link up to get the ball inside the penalty area but good work from Vidal wins the ball back for the hosts.
10' Llorente steps into space down the right-hand side and receives a good pass from Griezmann, allowing the midfielder to fire in an early cross. Suarez is lurking on the edge of the six-yard box but he’s unable to redirect the delivery as it exits the penalty area on the other side.
9' Not afraid of setting up a low block in front of their penalty area, Espanyol are sitting back and daring Atletico to break them down. More effective on the counter, it will be interesting to see how the visitors unpick the lock - with no shortage of attacking quality on display.
7' Espanyol have changed shape in the early stages of the match, switching from their 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1, using both Morlanes and Darger to shield the back four. Embarba and Vidal are tasked with providing creativity from the wings, while Melendo plays behind De Tomas.
5' WHAT A CHANCE FOR ESPANYOL! A total mix-up in defence sees Savic and Oblak miscommunicate, with both players expecting the other to deal with the danger inside the 18-yard box. Both idle, Embarba takes his opportunity, jumping onto the loose ball and firing a shot to the far corner that Oblak expertly turns past the post.
3' Vidal looks to beat Hermoso to the ball and burst into the penalty area, but the winger handles the ball with his arm during the attempt to win possession. It’s a free-kick for Atleti inside their own 18-yard box.
1' Espanyol get the match underway from the kick-off!
Atletico Madrid make just two changes from their exciting 2-2 draw with Villarreal last time out. Gimenez is dropped to the bench in favour of Felipe at centre-back, while a second debut for Griezmann leaves no room for Lemar.
Espanyol make five changes from the XI that lost 1-0 to Mallorca before the international break. A red card to Sergi Gomez means Calero gets the start at centre-back, while Vila is dropped for Pedrosa at left-back. David Lopez will not feature today which opens up space in the line-up for Morlanes, who will occupy central midfield. Either side of him on the left and right flanks, Puado and Dimata have been replaced by Melendo and Vidal - allowing Embarba to play at striker beside De Tomas.
ATLETICO MADRID SUBS: Renan Lodi, Sime Vrsaljko, Benjamin Lecomte, Rodrigo De Paul, Thomas Lemar, Hector Herrera, Jose Gimenez, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Joao Felix, Matheus Cunha.
ATLETICO MADRID XI (3-5-2): Jan Oblak; Stefan Savic, Felipe, Mario Hermoso; Kieran Trippier, Marcos Llorente, Koke, Angel Correa, Yannick Carrasco; Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann.
ESPANYOL SUBS: Nicolas Melamed, Miguelon, Alvaro Vadillo, Keidi Bare, Didac Vila, Lluis Recasens, Alvaro Garcia, Landry Dimata, Pere Joan, Wu Lei, Fran Merida, Loren Moron.
ESPANYOL XI (4-4-2): Diego Lopez; Adria Pedrosa, Leandro Cabrera, Fernando Calero, Oscar Gil; Oscar Melendo, Manuel Morlanes, Sergi Darder, Aleix Vidal; Adrian Embarba, Raul De Tomas.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let's take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with the hosts!
Atletico Madrid have a chance to retake first place with a win today, after Athletic Club’s victory yesterday took them above the capital club and into pole position. Convincing wins against Celta and Elche were met by a bizarre last-second draw with Villarreal before the international break - which preserved Simeone’s undefeated start to the year. With Antoine Griezmann expected to make his second debut today, Espanyol’s defence could be in for a tough time.
Despite the positivity of a promotion as Segunda Division winners just a year after their relegation from the top flight, the start to life back in LaLiga has been a tough one for Espanyol. Two 0-0 draws with Osasuna and Villarreal to open their campaign were met with a 1-0 loss to fellow risers Mallorca - leaving Vicente Moreno’s side in 16th place without a win, or a goal.
