Crystal Palace v Manchester United Live Commentary, 03/03/2021

0 - 0
Selhurst Park

United turn their attention to the Manchester derby this weekend then while Palace travel to a newly prolific Tottenham. We can only hope that those games have goals. That's all for now. Goodbye!
The draw keeps United second in the Premier League table after Leicester City were only able to draw 1-1 away to Burnley. They're 14 points behind their rivals City now. United are still on track for a top four finish but they're looking stale at the moment. Palace are 13th. They had more shots here than in their previous two games combined, so they'll be content with this.
Palace and United play out what is a second consecutive 0-0 draw for both teams. Neither side ever really looked like winning, with shots on target few and far between. United have Henderson to thank for saving them from throwing a point away at the death when van Aanholt had the best chance of the game.
J. Riedewald
Yellow Card
Crystal Palace
90' + 3' Riedewald picks up a late yellow card for a poor challenge on McTominay.
90' + 1' McTominay sends in a cross from deep that loops harmlessly out of play. Kouyate is angry about something or other.
90' There'll be two more minutes of this.
89' United switch off and very nearly get punished! Van Aanholt sneaks in with Wan-Bissaka caught napping and finds himself one-on-one with Henderson! Henderson rushes out to block the Dutchman's shot. That's a vital save at this late stage.
88' Wan-Bissaka loops a high ball towards the far post. Fernandes nods it back to Shaw whose ambitious effort whistles wide.
87' Ayew thinks he's won a free-kick near the corner flag but the linesman signals for a goal-kick instead.
86' Townsend, who's worried United with his direct runs, forces Fernandes to poke the ball out for a throw. Palace are making gradual progress down their right.
85' United force a corner down their left. Fernandes send it high towards the far post. Bailly keeps it in and United get the throw-in.
J. Schlupp
E. Eze
Crystal Palace
84' Palace substitution. Eze makes way for Schlupp who'll offer more cover down Palace's left.
83' United's long spell of possession is brought to an end as Townsend is brought down by Shaw.
81' Fernandes pops a pass to the feet of Greenwood who curls over the crossbar from inside the D. United are getting closer.
79' Palace survive United's corner. United are beginning to look more threatening as we enter the final 10 minutes.
77' Eze intentionally backs into Bailly and United get the free-kick. United take it quickly and James has a free header in Palace's box following Shaw's cross! It hits van Aanholt and goes out for a corner. That was a great chance.
D. James
E. Cavani
Manchester United
76' Solskjaer clearly wants more pace from United. James comes on for the quiet Cavani.
76' Ayew briefly beats Wan-Bissaka but the United right-back recovers well to block Ayew's cross. United are about to make another substitution.
75' McTominay makes his first contribution to the game. The Scot carries the ball into Palace's box where he's quickly crowded out.
S. McTominay
Manchester United
74' United make a change. McTominay is on for Fred. It's not particularly inspiring.
72' Palace's latest attack breaks down and United venture forward. Shaw reaches the byline but is tracked all the way by Ward.
70' United are huffing and puffing without really getting anywhere. Rashford's caught offside from Maguire's throughball. Palace are holding firm.
68' Matic takes what looks like a potshot from distance. It's blocked. It's United's first shot since the 27th minute, if it is a shot.
66' The mist over Selhurst Park is getting so thick the players must be struggling to see each other. No wonder the attacking play isn't great.
64' Benteke should really get a shot on target in United's penalty area after his strike partner Ayew cuts the ball back. Instead the Belgian completely mishits the ball. It's hard to believe this is the same striker that once scored 23 goals in a season for Aston Villa.
J. Riedewald
J. McCarthy
Crystal Palace
62' Palace make the first substitution of the game. Riedewald replaces McCarthy in central midfield.
61' Milivojevic and Cahill manage to see off the advance of Cavani but United still have the ball. That is until Townsend nips in.
59' Palace's captain Milivojevic is standing over this. The Serbian smashes the free-kick into the United wall. Townsend is first to the rebound and slashes an effort inches wide of the left-hand post. Henderson was rooted to the spot.
57' Benteke heads the ball on to Townsend who successfully keeps it in play. Eze picks up possession and dribbles his way to the D where he's tripped over by Fred. Palace free-kick.
55' United had 66 per cent possession of the ball in the first half. So far in the second half, it's the other way around with Palace dominating. United are having to stay patient.
54' Townsend races down the right only for his final ball to be lacking. United win possession but soon give a free-kick away to Palace.
53' Palace have started this half as positively as they did the first half. The hosts don't look afraid of United at the moment.
51' Benteke and Ayew combine to give Ayew a shooting chance from the edge of the box. The Ghanaian thumps the ball straight at Henderson who catches it.
50' Palace keep the pressure on and Benteke fires over on the volley. Palace get a third corner which United finally clear.
49' Benteke wins Palace a corner down their left. It's taken short to van Aanholt whose cross is blocked. It'll be another Palace corner.
47' Not to worry you, but the last three of United's league matches to be 0-0 at half-time have ended the same way. Let's hope that's not the case here.
45' We're back again for the second half. No changes at half-time.
Fernandes has 40 goal involvements in his 40 Premier League appearances so far with 23 goals and 17 assists. However, three of the last four matches in which the Portuguese has failed to register a goal or assist have been in London, as he's drawn blanks against Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham. Palace are doing their best to add their name to the list.
It's goalless at the break between Palace and United. Both sides have had their moments with United dictating the play as expected. Palace's defence has done its job so far.
43' Matic's cross from the left is headed out. Cahill makes a fantastic sliding block in the six-yard box to prevent Wan-Bissaka's follow-up from reaching Cavani.
41' Wan-Bissaka takes on Eze down the right and succeeds in buying a corner off the midfielder. Palace only half-clear it and McCarthy steps in to intercept.
40' Palace have had three shots in the first half to date, as many as they did in their two previous full games against Brighton and Fulham. 4-4-2 looks the best way for them to play as long as Zaha is out injured.
38' Van Aanholt sends the ball into United's box from deep as Townsend earns another free-kick from Shaw. Benteke backheels it towards a teammate but Cahill is offside earlier in the move.
36' United are looking a little frustrated by Palace's sturdy defence. Fred brings down Townsend and throws up his arms when the referee blows his whistle.
34' It's all a little scrappy in midfield at the moment. Neither team can create a clear shooting chance.
32' Palace have quelled United's threat for now. Fernandes brings down Eze in Palace's half and gives away the free-kick.
30' Eze skips past a few United players in midfield but can't find the right throughball. The 22-year-old's a promising talent.
29' Palace have a free-kick down their left as Benteke is fouled by Fred. Maguire deals with Eze's ball in easily.
27' United come on the attack again. Cavani can't keep a header down as Rashford's cross comes at him too quickly. Palace get the goal-kick.
25' All of United's six shots in the first 25 minutes have been by different players. Fernandes is obviously their main man these days but they've got plenty of attacking talent.
23' United keep possession from the corner. Fernandes curls a cross towards the far post with Maguire still lurking in the box. It hits the United captain on the head and goes out of play for a Palace goal-kick.
22' Greenwood picks up the ball in the D and fires a shot past the left-hand post. It takes a deflection on the way through so United get the corner.
20' United are beginning to control the midfield after handing Palace a few changes early on. The visitors have had 70 per cent possession so far.
18' Rashford bears down on goal from the left but finds his path blocked. Fred has a pop from outside the box and it's not far from the bottom left corner. Guaita comes across to claim it.
17' Palace and United may have both drawn their last games 0-0 but this one looks like it will have goals. It's been an engaging game so far.
16' Rashford fizzes a shot just wide of the left-hand post after latching onto Shaw's low cross. That's another warning for Palace.
14' Again United play themselves into trouble in defence. They're let off as Townsend slips on the turf just outside the box, allowing them to get the ball clear.
13' United have a corner. The ball takes a deflection off Rashford and Cavani flicks over from inside the six-yard box! You'd have bet on the Uruguayan scoring from there.
12' Chance for United! Guaita makes a fantastic fingertip save to keep out Matic's rasping shot from distance. It's heading straight for the top right corner.
11' United zip the ball around in front of Palace's box. Fernandes is frustrated as his poor touch leads him to give away a free-kick, killing the attack.
9' Wan-Bissaka hands Palace the first corner of the game. It's an easy catch for Henderson.
8' Palace have started strongly. Maguire cuts out a pass intended for Ayew and Townsend has a shot blocked from distance.
7' United make a hash of playing out from the back and Palace pounce. Townsend's high cross into the box finds Benteke. Benteke blazes a volley over the bar.
6' Palace have a free-kick down their right. Townsend swings it in left-footed and it curls all the way through to Henderson who catches it comfortably.
4' Palace are playing a 4-4-2 with Ayew and Benteke together up front. Ward slides in late on Shaw and leaves the United left-back hobbling. Hopefully he'll be OK.
2' Both teams are settling into the game. Fernandes has a throughball blocked and Ayew looks to spring Palace on the counter, sending through Benteke. Maguire comes across to challenge and ends up winning a throw for United.
1' And we're underway!
The two teams are out on the pitch at a foggy Selhurst Park. Palace are in their usual red and blue vertical stripes. United will play in their white and black zebra kit.
United have never lost in 11 Premier League away games against Crystal Palace, the most one side has played at another without ever losing in the competition. However, Palace have had United's number recently, winning two of their last three league meetings including a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford earlier this season. Can Palace complete their first ever league double over the Red Devils?
Palace boss Roy Hodgson makes one change from his side's draw with Fulham. McCarthy comes into midfield for Riedewald. United make four changes from the Chelsea game at the weekend. Henderson gets a go in goal. Cavani, Matic and Bailly also start.

Manchester United are unbeaten in 20 games now away from home in the league, a run only four teams have surpassed in English top-flight history. United's 0-0 draw away to Chelsea last time out, their fifth 0-0 draw of the season, showed their attacking limitations. With archrivals Manchester City coming up at the weekend, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men will be looking for a morale-boosting result here.
Crystal Palace are just a few wins away from securing their Premier League place for another season, although they're still missing their talisman Wilfried Zaha. The Eagles have managed just six shots in their last two league games, drawing 0-0 with Fulham last time out. They'll be hoping someone else chips in with goals to get them safely over the line.
