It was the Promise Keepers which drew the first blood but despite their numerical advantage following the straight red card given to Isiaka Oladuntoye, they allowed Rangers back into the game with the Flying Antelopes leading 3-1 until the 86th minute.
However, two goals from Dennis Nya late in the game denied the Flying Antelopes maximum points as Akwa United earned a share of the spoils.
As predicted, both coach Rafael Everton and his opposite number at Rangers Gbenga Ogunbote were overtly attack-minded in Saturday's tie.
However, hard as both teams tried, they could not find the back of the net in the first half.
The second half was action-packed as the Promise Keppers got the first goal of the night two minutes after the restart.
Cyril Olisema scored from the penalty spot after the referee spotted a handball in the Rangers box.
The bad situation for Rangers got worse when their defender Oladuntoye was booked for a second time in the game after a foul on Marshal and they were reduced to 10 men.
However, the Promise Keepers failed to make their numerical advantage count as Chiamaka Madu soon got an equaliser for the Flying Antelopes.
That goal proved to be a big boost for Rangers as their gangling striker Micahel Uchebo added two quick goals afterward.
Akwa United did not give up and their tenacity paid off late on with Nya scoring in the 87th and 90th minutes as the game ended in a 3-3 draw.
With Saturday's result, Akwa United are now on five points while Rangers are on four after three matches
