Player Ratings: Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Real Madrid

Goal.com rates the players on show as despite a Cristiano Ronaldo strike, goals from Robert Lewandowski and Marcel Schmelzer send unbeaten BVB to the top of Group D

    Roman Weidenfeller

The keeper was caught too far off his line, enabling Ronaldo to loop in the equaliser, but in fact had very little else to do. He was relatively fortunate that a number of his punches saw the ball clear.

  • Neven Subotic

    Neven Subotic

The Serbian centre-back was imposing in the air, winning header after header but drifted too far from Hummels at times, opening space for runners in the channels. He looked slightly immobile on the deck too.

  • Mats Hummels

    Mats Hummels

Kept Benzema quiet all evening and managed to stop Madrid from slipping any passes on the deck in behind. It was a classy display from the centre-back which helped ensure BVB's first ever win over the Spaniards.

  • Lukasz Piszczek

    Lukasz Piszczek

Typically charged forward as much as possible but this unfortunately did more damage to his own side rather than the opposition. He was caught too high up on the pitch as Ronaldo lifted in the equaliser.

  • Marcel Schmelzer

Marcel Schmelzer Top of the Match

Found it difficult to deal with Di Maria in the early stages as the Argentine beat him on more than one occasion. He soon figured him out and after a last-ditch tackle keep the score level, he fired in a superb goal at the other end.

  • Sebastian Kehl

    Sebastian Kehl

The BVB captain had a robust game in midfield, chasing everything down in a physical outing. He forced two decent saves from Casillas before supplying a great pass to put Lewandowski through on goal for the opener.

  • Sven Bender
    26
    12
    3.50

    Sven Bender

He may have been left wanting for pace as Ronaldo raced away from him on the opening goal but he was at least in the right position. He was a stern opponent in the middle and his chasing played a crucial role in the win.

  • Mario Götze
    35
    23
    2.50

    Mario Götze

Dropped slightly off the forward line in order to pull the strings for Dortmund when in the opposition half. However this did not occur enough and he should well have got himself a goal but Casillas saved his 50th-minute strike.

  • Marco Reus
    42
    11
    3.00

    Marco Reus

Was unable to display the same level of conviction that has made him shine across the continent in recent weeks. He misplaced a few too many passes but was vastly better in the second half with some positive dribbling.

  • Kevin Großkreutz
    17
    15
    2.50

    Kevin Großkreutz

The winger was extremely quiet for much of the game and only seemed to play a part once Dortmund had gone 2-1 up. An effort that blazed wide of the goal was perhaps his best contribution in an uninspiring display.

  • Robert Lewandowski
    93
    12
    3.50

    Robert Lewandowski

Caused the Real Madrid defenders a number of problems as he regularly dropped off to get involved in the play. Showed excellent composure to fire past Casillas in the first half.

Substitutions

  • Ilkay Gündogan

    Ilkay Gündogan

Replaced Bender in the 67th minute but failed to add more dynamism in the middle of the park.

  • Ivan Perisic

Brought on for Reus in second-half stoppage time.

  • Julian Schieber

    Julian Schieber

Came on for Mario Gotze in the 87th minute and was unable to impact proceedings.

  • Iker Casillas
    39
    25
    3.00

    Iker Casillas

Made two solid saves to deny Kehl in the first half but could not have done much more to keep out Lewandowski as the Pole found the tightest of gaps. Seemed unwilling to catch and flapped when under pressure.

  • Raphaël Varane
    15
    47
    2.00

    Raphaël Varane

The 19-year-old had an uncomfortable night in defence as Madrid lacked discipline at the back. He struggled to deal with the fluidity of the BVB forward line and failed to pick up the opponents on a number of occasions.

  • Pepe
    15
    59
    2.00

    Pepe

Failed to organise the defence suitably as Madrid frequently looked panicked at the back when under pressure. A sloppy pass in a dangerous area gifted Dortmund the opening goal and he never seemed to recover.

  • Sergio Ramos
    29
    26
    2.50

    Sergio Ramos

Managed to keep Reus under wraps throughout much of the game but did not offer an attacking outlet down the right. He skied a fantastic chance on the stroke of half time and seemed to be a step off the play after the break.

  • Sami Khedira
    25
    25

    Sami Khedira

Misplaced a few passes early on and was withdrawn after just 20 minutes with an injury.

  • Mesut Özil
    45
    31
    3.00

    Mesut Özil

Only seemed to appear in brief glimpses throughout the fixture as BVB's quick pressing limited the time he had on the ball. Nevertheless, he supplied a brilliant assist for Ronaldo with a long ball from deep.

  • Xabi Alonso
    23
    26
    2.50

    Xabi Alonso

Had a competent night as he did his best to keep Madrid in control of the ball for large parts. He sprayed a number of exquisite passes about the pitch but failed to exert his true influence on the game.

  • Michael Essien
    22
    63
    1.50

Michael Essien Flop of the Match

It was by no means a comfortable night for the Ghanaian as he was asked to play out of position at left-back. He struggled when confronted with players running at him and spent a lot of time chasing back towards his own goal.

  • Ángel Di María
    23
    40
    2.50

    Ángel Di María

Was Real Madrid's liveliest player during the early exchanges but he lacked an end product to some excellent runs. His influence waned as the game continued and Schmelzer eventually got to grips with him.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo
    66
    45
    3.00

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Netted his fifth Champions League goal this season with a sublime lob after Ozil's long ball. His powerful, direct running always had the BVB defence backtracking though he did not get many other chances to add to his tally.

  • Karim Benzema
    19
    43
    2.00

    Karim Benzema

Never really managed to impose himself upon Dortmund's centre-back pairing. His movement was not up to scratch as he rarely got into any potential goal-scoring opportunities.

Substitutions

  • Luka Modric
    45
    35
    2.50

    Luka Modric

Came on for Khedira in the 20th minute but rarely got a chance to utilise his playmaking skills from the deeper position. He still put in a few good challenges but lacked the solidity of the Germany international

  • Gonzalo Higuaín
    12
    33
    2.00

    Gonzalo Higuaín

Replaced Benzema in the 73rd minute but could not find a way past Hummels and Subotic as Madrid were unable to net a second equaliser.
