FC Augsburg - Borussia Dortmund Preview: Klopp's men look to get back to winning ways

The reigning champions are hoping to put last weekend's frustrating draw with Stuttgart behind them as they try to keep pace with runaway leaders Bayern Munich

Borussia Dortmund have no real injury worries going into their Bundesliga clash with FC Augsburg, after their impressive draw at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

Lukasz Piszczek and Ilkay Gundogan both picked up slight knocks during their Champions League clash, but Jurgen Klopp is confident both players will be available to travel to Bavaria.

The game also saw a return to action for midfielder Sven Bender who came off the bench in the second-half and the Germany international is in place to start his first game for Dortmund since shaking off a calf strain.

Midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski returned to training this week, but Saturday’s fixture comes too soon as he looks to regain his fitness.

Augsburg currently prop up the Bundesliga table and have had no luck on the injury front so far this season, but there are a few positives for Markus Weinzierl’s side ahead of their game against Dortmund.

Their right-back crisis could be resolved by the return of Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker, who returns from a knee injury.

The defender made a goalscoring return against Preussen Munster in the DFB-Pokal and his presence should allow Kevin Vogt to revert to his usual position in the middle of the park, having filled in at full-back during Augsburg’s defeat to Hannover 96 last weekend.

Ja-Cheoul Koo is also in contention to return to the starting XI after coming on as a substitute in that defeat, while Sascha Molders could return to the squad having completed 90 minutes for the reserves against Bayern II.

  • Last season's corresponding fixture saw Borussia Dortmund held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at the SGL Arena.
  • Last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Stuttgart was the first time Jurgen Klopp's side had failed to score in any match since that draw in March.
  • Dortmund have managed to net in every game on their travels in the League this season, Mario Gotze (pictured, right) and Ivan Perisic leading the way with two strikes each.

  • FC Augsburg have only scored in three of their 10 Bundesliga games this season.

  • The Bavarian outfit will hope that home support proves decisive on Saturday. The SGL Arena can house 30,600 fans on matchdays.
  • Tobias Werner is the only player to net more than once for Augsburg this year, with the winger scoring on two separate occasions in the Bundesliga.

After finally returning from injury, the South Korean should reclaim his starting place in Augsburg's midfield. The Bavarian outfit will be hoping Koo can add a penetrating dimension to their attacking game, something that has been sorely lacking in their campaign so far.
Robert Lewandowski
Robert Lewandowski
Position: Striker
Squad Number: 9
Games Goals YC RC

The Polish striker's form has been somewhat lukewarm so far this season, with the forward struggling to sustain the goalscoring form he possessed last term. However, Lewandowski will fancy his chances against Bundeliga's basement side and will be buoyed by the memory of his hat-trick against the same team at Signal Iduna Park last year.
Dortmund need a victory to keep up with Bayern Munich's rampant start to the season, but will be reminded of the frustrating time they had to endure at the SGL Arena last season. However, with the likes of Mario Gotze and Marco Reus at their disposal, Jurgen Klopp's side should find victory straightforward against an Augsburg side severely lacking in confidence.
