Ghana emerged out of a tough game against Sudan in Omdurman with all the spoils after a strong resilient performance ended with a 3-1 win on Friday.

Captain Asamoah Gyan scored either side of Al Tahir’s spot kick - taking his national tally to 34 and breaking Abedi Pele’s 33-goal record for the Black Stars - before Sulley Muntari sealed the win with a bizarre third goal late on straight from a corner.

The start of the game was a reflection of the importance it held for the Ghanaian side as they showed a willingness to get stuck in and looked to dominate the game from the start. Ghana scored the opening goal through Al Ain’s Gyan, a goal which seemed to cause confusion within the officials, but was finally accepted by the referee.

The game was to take a twist a few minutes later though as the Nile Crocodiles were awarded a penalty which saw Richard Kissi-Boateng also get sent off for a tackle on Mudathir Al Tahir. Al Tahir stepped up to convert the penalty to level the scores. The goal stunned the Ghanaians as they almost conceded a second soon after, having to rely on the alertness of Esperance defender Harrison Afful to prevent them from conceding a quick-fire double.

Sudan, buoyed by their one-man advantage, took control of the game and went on to test the resolve of the Ghanaian defence and their goalkeeper Fatau Dauda, but the Ghanaians managed to hold on until half-time.

Sudan started the second half as they ended the first - trying to use their man advantage - but came up against stiff opposition from the Ghanaian defence, especially goalkeeper Dauda. Sudan were stunned though by the Ghanaians as Gyan got his second of the game to restore Ghana’s lead in the game with a header after good build up play from Afful and Muntari.

Sudan then struck the post a few minutes later with Afful reacting quickest to prevent the rebound from falling to a Sudanese foot. Ghana went into defensive mode after the second goal in an effort to retain the lead but they were able to catch the Sudanese with a third goal as the Sudanese goalkeeper Zughabir fumbled a quite tricky ball from Muntari’s corner into his own net to hand the Ghanaians the win.

Ghana now move top of their qualifying group ahead of Zambia who play Lesotho on Saturday. Ghana will be travelling to Lesotho for their penultimate game before rounding up this stage of qualifiers with a home tie against Zambia.
