Player Ratings: West Ham 3-1 Chelsea

Rafael Benitez is still without a win as the Blues blew a one-goal lead following Juan Mata's opener, with half-time substitutes Mohamed Diame and Matt Taylor both impressing

    Jussi Jaaskelainen

Couldn't stop Mata's precise finish in the corner and was equally helpless with the free kick that struck the post. Apart from that made some solid saves, but worryingly gave away the ball to Hazard from a throw.

    Winston Reid

Looked for a second that might have given the Hammers the lead, but Cech eventually got to his header. A pretty solid game from him though, not giving Torres much space. Almost grabbed a winner with another header, but this one was cleared off the line.

  • James Tomkins

James Tomkins Flop of the Match

Is a very capable defender, but deployed in central midfield, he looked out of place. Picked up Mata in the build up to the goal, but let him run free into the box to score.

    Joey O'Brien

Made a good block from Mata's rebound shot and struggled up against Hazard in the first half but kept him pretty quiet in the second.

  • James Collins

    James Collins

Fluffed a clearance straight at Mata but was lucky to see it bounce back to him. Was an effective presence at the other end of the pitch though, and perhaps harshly had a free kick given against him when nodding down for Nolan's disallowed strike.

  • Guy Demel

    Guy Demel

Will have been relieved his mistake in the 20th minute didn't lead to a goal as he passed straight at Ramires. Did pretty well up against Moses, but let the winger get the better of him a few times.

  • Kevin Nolan

    Kevin Nolan

Had the ball in the net with a bicycle kick, but the whistle had already been blown for a foul by Collins. Came close with a header that was well-saved and got his team going. Always played on the limits of the law, but rode the line well.

  • Matthew Jarvis

    Matthew Jarvis

Didn't get the better of Azpilicueta in his rare opportunities on the ball in the first half, but the winger looked the most likely source of a goal for the Hammers. Found Cole well early in the second half, and beat the right-back before seeing his deflected cross nodded in by Cole. Looked unsure what to do when going through on goal but saw his shot well stopped by Cech. Another decent knock to Cole for the second goal.

  • Mark Noble

    Mark Noble

Put in a dangerous free kick, but then tried a ridiculous back heel that put his team under pressure on the counter. Was overrun in the first half, but a lot more effective in the second alongside Diame. Played a great ball for Jarvis late in the game.

  • Gary O'Neil

    Gary O'Neil

Was ineffective alongside Tomkins in creating a shield for the defence in the first half and made way at the break.

  • Carlton Cole

    Carlton Cole

The striker often struggles for goals, with his overall play that of a man to hold the ball up for his team-mates. Did not get much support in the first half, but ultimately made the difference for his team with the equaliser and great strength to hold off Cahill and set up Diame for the winner.

    Matthew Taylor

Came on at half-time and almost made an immediate impact, sending Jarvis through with a decent pass. Sent in a series of dangerous crosses that put the Chelsea defence under pressure for the first time in the game. Couldn't quite find the net in the dying moments, but the rebound went in.

  • Mohamed Diame

Also entered the fray during at the break and had a vicious volley blocked by Cahill. Put Mikel on his backside with a neat body swerve, and scored the all-important goal in the 86th minute with a great low drive.

  • Modibo Maiga

    Modibo Maiga

Came on late but got the goal that prevented any late nerves for the hosts after playing in Taylor well before calmly converting.

  • Petr Cech

    Petr Cech

Comfortable in possession, took on Carlton Cole easily enough. Claimed the ball well despite being fouled by Nolan. Booked for handling outside the area when there was no real need for him to come for the ball, but made up for it with a great save moments later. Couldn't do much about the first goal, and was well-beaten by the second. Made a good save from Taylor, but couldn't stop the rebound for the third.

  • Branislav Ivanovic

    Branislav Ivanovic

Made a crucial intervention to prevent a goal with the pressure mounting after half-time. Was angry to see Cole's goal stand with the striker's arms on him, but didn't make a concerted effort to clear the ball. Saw the second fly through his legs.

  • Ashley Cole
    65

    Ashley Cole

Wasn't troubled in the first half, but with Taylor's introduction a lot of crosses came from his side. Started to show the midfielder onto his right foot which was more successful. Made a great clearance on the line. Should have cleared the ball upfield but gave it away poorly for the third goal.

  • Gary Cahill
    37
    96
    2.50

    Gary Cahill

Didn't have much to do in the first half, though a lack of communication with Cech resulted in the keeper coming to punch and earning a yellow card. Took a boot in the face after bravely stooping to head clear. Got a header on Jarvis' cross for the opener but could only knock it skywards.

  • César Azpilicueta

    2.50

    César Azpilicueta

A good duel between the right-back and Jarvis was forming as early as the opening 10 minutes. Generally had a good game, but lost the ball for the equaliser and failed to prevent Jarvis' cross, with the second also coming from his side of the pitch.

  • Ramires
    84
    63
    3.00

    Ramires

Made a great run before finding Moses for a shot after intercepting a pass. Broke again well minutes later, finding Torres in the centre. Played a defence-splitting ball for Ashley Cole but the defender couldn't keep up with it.

  • John Obi Mikel
    86
    83

    John Obi Mikel

Held his position with great restraint in the first half, and made a good block on a header from Tomkins. Picked up a somewhat needless booking for complaining after the West Ham equaliser. Made to look somewhat silly by Diame as he fell on his backside.

  • Victor Moses

    Victor Moses

Found Torres with a great pass in the build up to the opening goal. Skewed a great chance wide in the 20th minute. Made a fabulous weaving run to set up Mata in the 40th minute. Faded in the second half and was replaced late on.

  • Eden Hazard

    Eden Hazard

Linked well with his team-mates in the opening 30 minutes. A good turn and shot that flew over. Forced a good save from Jaaskelainen, but was quiet again for the visitors and often looked frustrated. Intercepted a throw from Jaaskelainen and attempted an effort from distance but got it wrong before being subbed.

  • Fernando Torres

    Fernando Torres

Made a good run and a pinpoint pass for Mata's opener. His first shot showed his rusty touch in front of goal, spooning an effort over on the counter. Looked dangerous, but another pull-back to Hazard was at an awkward height. A weak shot straight at Jaaskelainen from a rebound. Denied with a late header straight at Jaaskelainen.

  • Juan Mata

    Juan Mata

Took his goal very nicely, finding the bottom corner precisely. Was buzzing around with his usual efficiency, and came so close to putting the Blues back in the lead with a free kick that struck the post.

Substitutions

  • Oscar

    Oscar

Came on for Hazard but struggled a little to get into the game. Had a shot deflected over, but was given as a goal kick.

  • Marko Marin
    122
    28

    Marko Marin

Came on late for his second appearance and put in a good cross to the back post. Was crowded out on another run at the defence.
