Player Ratings: West Brom 0-2 Liverpool

A penalty from Charlie Adam and an Andy Carroll strike secured a comfortable for the visitors who created virtually nothing in attack and looked vulnerable in defence

    Ben Foster

Gave his defence a break by coming out to punch crosses, but was undone by a penalty and Carroll goal, the latter which crept under his body, although it would be harsh to criticise him for being so exposed.

  • Jonas Olsson

Jonas Olsson Flop of the Match

Was fortunate that an early misjudgement to allow Suarez clear was not punished, but his main battle came up against Carroll whom he tussled with throughout the match. Was booked for a late challenge on the former Newcastle man then it was his pass which allowed Liverpool to break and score their second. A rare poor game.

  • Steven Reid

    Steven Reid

Kept Downing fairly quiet down the wing and defended well, but could have done more as an attacking threat. Handled in the area from a Carroll header but would have been a harsh penalty.

    Gareth McAuley

Looked more comfortable than his defensive partner, but was completely missing at the back when Carroll was put through to score just before half-time. His worst performance since breaking into the team.

    Billy Jones

Coped well with the Liverpool threat down his side and tried his best to get forward. Has played in two derbies and against the Reds and not looked out of place in any of the matches.

  • Somen Tchoyi

    Somen Tchoyi

Given a chance by the injury to Shane Long, Tchoyi struggled to make his mark against Agger and Skrtel apart from one turn and shot which narrowly went wide. Shows plenty of endeavour which endears him to the home fans.

  • Chris Brunt

    Chris Brunt

Started on the right but came inside whenever possible and was the instigator of most attacks through his passing. Had little to aim for in the area but looked the most likely to create anything.

    Jerome Thomas

Will feel hard done by to have given that penalty away, but never looked like redeeming himself in Liverpool’s half as they easily crowded him out.

    Youssouf Mulumbu

The midfielder said in the week that he felt his performances had not been up to scratch and you could see why as the game drifted him by. Was over-run by Adam and Lucas in the centre before being taken off on the hour mark.

  • Paul Scharner

    Paul Scharner

Like others in the West Brom side he has come in and done well recently, but the Austrian failed to get a grip on Suarez in the hole and was not a creative force at the other end of the pitch either. Was brought off early in the second half.

  • Peter Odemwingie

    Peter Odemwingie

Tried dropping deep and playing alongside the back four but he had a lack of service throughout. Came close to getting on the end of one Tchoyi cross but never looked like he was going to score.

    James Morrison

An early change in the second half, he showed more inventiveness than most of his team-mates as he tried to dribble his way into the Liverpool area, but could not engineer any scoring opportunities.

  • Graham Dorrans

    20
    2.50

    Graham Dorrans

Had a chance to shine in midfield having been given half an hour, but he did little to shield his defence and his delivery into the penalty area was not good enough.

  • Simon Cox

    3.00

    Simon Cox

Was Roy Hodgson's final throw of the dice but had no chance to reduce West Brom's arrears as Skrtel and Agger stayed strong against him.

  • Pepe Reina

    Pepe Reina

Will wonder why he was asked to make the trip to the Midlands as he had very little to do, although he showed he still has a tendancy to flap at crosses. The Spaniard will hope for more matches like this.

  • Glen Johnson

    Glen Johnson

Always a threat down the right, he also impressed defensively, not allowing West Brom any joy down his side.

  • José Enrique

    José Enrique

Started the match with a pinpoint pass which sent Suarez through down the middle and continued to shine. Looked assured defensively and made plenty of over-lapping runs to assist Downing.

  • Daniel Agger
    169
    15

    Daniel Agger

Stepped up to the mark with Jamie Carragher not being present and did well against Tchoyi who looked a threat in the second half.

  • Martin Skrtel
    164
    12
    3.50

    Martin Skrtel

An impressive performance from the defender as he kept Odemwingie largely at bay and made sure Reina had almost nothing to do throughout. Will make it hard for Carragher to get back in.

  • Jordan Henderson
    127
    25
    3.00

    Jordan Henderson

A shrewd decision to play the former Sunderland man as kept things tight in midfield and made it hard for West Brom to get near the Liverpool goal. Never showed much of an attacking threat but did not really need to with Suarez pulling the strings.

  • Stewart Downing
    84
    83
    3.00

    Stewart Downing

The least effective of all Liverpool's players as he failed to trouble Reid down the left and never managed to provide Carroll with any decent service. Late switch to the right saw him hit the post but by then the game was over.

  • Lucas Leiva
    194
    10
    3.50

    Lucas Leiva

Returned to the side after suspension and proved a great foil for Adam, looking solid defensively and playing a great ball to Suarez in the build-up to Carroll's goal.

  • Charlie Adam

Charlie Adam Top of the Match

Converted his penalty with ease and was confident in possession as he looked to pull the strings from midfield. An accomplished performance that showed class throughout

  • Luis Suárez
    241
    27
    3.50

    Luis Suárez

A performance which encapsulated everything about the Uruguayan. A fine display of passes, flicks and tricks which continually bamboozled the West Brom defence, in particular for Carroll's goal, but there was a selfishness about him as he continued to miss the target when well placed. The debate will rage on about his theatrics after the penalty he won, although it didn't appear as if he was trying to fool the officials.

  • Andy Carroll
    216

    Andy Carroll

Berated by the home fans, he responded in the right way, causing Olsson many problems as he went for absolutely everything in the air and forming a good partnership with Suarez. Was a bit fortunate with his goal after appearing to have taken a heavy touch but will be glad to have seen the ball hit the back of the net. Will feel like he should have scored at least once more.

Came on to make his 250th Premier League appearance near the end but that was probably just to give Suarez a rest.
