Parma 0-1 AC Milan: Superb Andrea Pirlo strike sends Massimiliano Allegri's men top of Serie A

Midfielder's curling effort was the difference at the Ennio Tardini...

AC Milan leapfrogged title rivals Inter to the summit of Serie A courtesy of a 1-0 victory over Parma at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

It was a match the visitors dominated but they were only able to find the back of the net once thanks to mixture of great goalkeeping from Antonio Mirante and some sub-par finishing from Milan.

But the three points were secured midway through the first half as Andrea Pirlo’s sublime curling effort breached Parma’s resurgent back line.

The visitors wasted no time in showing their attacking intent as Gennaro Gattuso slipped a neat pass into the path of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who fired his shot wide of the far post in the opening exchanges.

Former Milan striker Hernan Crespo apurned a glorious opportunity shortly after when his awkward close-range header failed to beat Christian Abiatti after Alessandro Nesta did just enough to put off the Argentine striker.

It was a scrappy affair at times in the first half and the match was in danger of turning into a scrappy affair until Pirlo’s strike settled the tie in the 25th minute.

Milan then threatened to double their advantage when Ronaldinho's weighted ball found Ibrahimovic in the clear but Mirante did well to rush off his line and make a brave block.

Mirante once again kept his side in the match when he made a miraculous triple save. Ibrahimoovic muscled Massimo Paci off the ball and was one-on-one with the Parma keeper but could not steer his shot past him and Mirante stood tall for the rebound before kicking out the striker's third attempt.

Moment of magic | Pirlo's stunning goal settled the contest

Chances were limited after the restart, although Ronaldinho exhibited a few Brazilian skills which promptly encouraged the hosts to foul the midfielder. The resultant free-kick was sent wide of the target.

Milan had another chance to double their advantage after Ibrahimovic spotted Robinho on the right hand side but the Brazilian wasn't able to hit the target from 15 yards out.

Mirante was on hand to deny the visitors again just after the hour mark as his sharp reflexes helped tip Ronaldinho's rasping shot over the bar.

Milan almost paid for their profligacy in the 78th minute though when Blerim Dzemaili unleashed a low drive that Abiatti pushed around the post. The Milan goalkeeper was called into action moments later when dived at the feet of Crespo.

As the game wore on, Parma were unable to create any clear-cut chances and Milan escaped with all three points and top spot in the Serie A standings before the rest of the league fixtures commence on Sunday.
