The World Cup-winning Argentina international can always be relied upon to catch the eye when he takes to the field, but he does not always fall under the microscope for positive reasons. His antics during a Premier League meeting with the Bees were certainly questionable.

With Villa leading 2-1 away at Brentford, Martinez found himself tangling with Bees striker Neal Maupay. After being barged into, the South American shot-stopper crumpled to the turf in apparent agony – leading his rivals to poke fun at the serious injury that he appeared to have suffered, with the theme tune to popular sitcom ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ played over the top of comical footage.

Martinez did jump back to his feet once it became apparent that no action would be taken, with matters then taken into his own hands moments later. He nudged Maupay to the ground before grabbing him by the collar, sparking a mass melee involving players from both teams.

Boubacar Kamara was sent off for pushing Yehor Yarmolyuk in the face, while Villa boss Unai Emery told talkSPORT afterwards that Martinez is “very, very responsible” and “very mature” despite the 31-year-old making plenty of headlines for his gamesmanship at penalties and crude celebrations when landing major awards.
