The Best of Broos: Bafana Bafana coach's most outlandish quotes

Hugo Broos Bafana Bafana
The 70-year-old is as an Afcon-winner from his time with Cameroon and has coached clubs in Belgium, Algeria, Turkey and Central Macedonia

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos is not one to mince his words, as South Africans have found out over the past couple of years.

Upon his arrival in South Africa, the veteran coach wasn't afraid to ruffle a few feathers and criticised Bafana Bafana's lack of success at major international tournaments as well as standards in the PSL.

While his comments have not always gone down well and some have been controversial, his direct no-nonsense approach should be respected, and perhaps there are lessons to be learned based on some of his points of view.

GOAL brings you a compilation of some of the Belgian's juiciest quotes:

  • Siphiwe Tshabalala South Africa Mexico 2010 World Cup 06112010

    World Cup 2010 'a present'

“You see what has happened in the last 22 years? You had a few quarterfinals in the Afcon, that’s all,” said Broos.

“And you were in the [2010] World Cup because it was a present. You organised it, you were there and didn’t have to do anything for that.”

  • Percy Tau, Bafana Bafana, November 2021

Taking down national hero Tau a notch

“Even with a South African coach who wanted him in the team, he is not succeeding. There was an Al Ahly player who said and I quote that player, 'Percy Tau doesn’t have the quality to play in the team like Al Ahly'," Broos said.

“This is not good. Percy Tau is one of the best SA players at the moment and he can’t succeed at Al Ahly. I don’t blame the player for that. I just see what happens. If there is an Egyptian coach who maybe doesn’t like Percy then they’ll push him out because his performances are not good enough.

“[When talking about SA players based overseas] we don’t talk about AC Milan, we don’t talk about Sevilla, we don’t talk about PSG, we don’t talk about Manchester United and all those other big teams. We talk about Al Ahly which is a big team in Africa, and our best player can’t succeed there.”

  • Orlando Stadium

    "Joburg is paradise"

On Ghana playing Ethiopia in South Africa (Orlando Stadium) instead of in Ethiopia, Broos said:

"It’s not normal that we and Zimbabwe had to travel to Ethiopia and that Ghana could come to paradise, South Africa.

"I’m sorry but this is paradise. I don’t know if you know Bahir Dar in Ethiopia, this is paradise in Joburg. This is not normal. This is not fair. I don’t blame Ghana, but I blame Caf and Fifa - they have to change. We’re talking here about the qualifiers for World Cup. The highest tournament in football."

  • Hugo Broos

    "Things are different in Europe"

"We have to make football more professional. I am just speaking from my experience. I am European and things are different in Europe than here in Africa. I also have African experience. I worked two years in Cameroon, and when I compare South Africa to Cameroon, the potential is 10 times bigger," he said.

  • Mamelodi Sundowns vs Stellenbosch 2022.

    Slating Sundowns

“When I compare SA with Belgium for an example, the best team here Sundowns will not be in the top eight, I am sure.

"Technically, Sundowns are better than a lot of Belgium clubs. I look at the matches here in South Africa, I see the rhythm is not high and there is a lack tactically, mentally and also when it comes to intensity.

"It’s not as intense as compared to Belgium, Italy, England or Spain. So, as a result, SA has a lot of distance to cover and we have to work and increase the level of the league to be higher,” said Broos.

  • Hugo Broos Bafana

    Confidence in qualifying

"But the 2023 African Cup of Nations, if we don't qualify for that you can 'kill me'. And if we succeed in that, then I think we are on a good way and then 2026 World Cup has to be a must," the Belgian said.

  • Themba Zwane, Bafana Bafana & Mohamed Kamara, Sierra Leone, September 2022

    Change of heart

After doing an about-turn and calling up a player previously deemed too old, Themba Zwane, Broos stated:

"Only fools don't change their minds, I said a lot of things about him and certainly that he was too old," he said after announcing the squad on SABC 1.

  • Hugo Broos

    "The dominated lions"

Lastly, a quote from his time as Cameroon boss - speaking at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, which his side eventually went on to win:

"I did not recognize my team in the first half. They were not the Indomitable Lions, rather the dominated lions. We had no spirit, no teamwork."
