Goal casts an eye over the best and worst performers

Melbourne Victory have snuck past Sydney FC 3-2 in dramatic fashion to seal their spot in the A-League decider against Newcastle Jets next Saturday.

In a thrilling encounter that went to extra time, some players starred while others shied away from the big occasion.

Goal casts our eye over every performer after a semi-final that won't be forgotten anytime soon.

  • Andrew Redmayne

    Andrew Redmayne

    Rating: 5/10

Couldn't do much about the first two goals but should've done better with the third.

  • Michael Zullo Sydney FC

    Michael Zullo

     Rating: 6/10

A very lively performance from the defender, was a real menace in the first half before fading as the game went on.

  • Jordy Buijs Sydney FC

    Jordy Buijs

    Rating: 5/10

Went off injured just before the hour mark and wasn't able to command the backline as he usually does with a back injury perhaps holding him back.

  • Alex Wilkinson Sydney FC

    Alex Wilkinson

    Rating: 5/10

Struggled to cope with Victory's pace but his experience ensured he wasn't caught cold too often.

  • Luke Wilkshire

    Luke Wilkshire

    Rating: 6/10

Like Zullo, was lively down the wings but lacked any end product.

  • Brandon O'Neill Sydney FC v Central Coast Mariners A-League 10032017

    Brandon O'Neill

    Rating: 8/10

Brilliant performance in midfield. Barely put a ball wrong and never gave Victory much space in the middle.

  • Josh Brillante Sydney FC

    Joshua Brillante

    Rating: 4/10

Culpable for Victory's second and looked a bit sluggish all night.

  • Thomas Deng Adrian Mierze

    Adrian Mierzejewski

    Rating: 7/10

Played with real purpose and swung in the free-kick for Sydney's goal before playing a telling part in the injury-time equaliser.

  • Milos Ninkovic

    Milos Ninkovic

    Rating: 7/10

Graceful as ever in midfield but didn't command himself on the contest.

  • Alex Brosque Sydney FC A-League

    Alex Brosque

    Rating: 5/10

A very quiet night from the skipper in what could've been his final game.

  • Bobo Sydney FC

    Bobo

    Rating: 6/10

Kept quiet like Brosque, but did force a fine save from Thomas late in normal time.

  • Sydney FC subs

    Ratings: 7/10

Simon, Warland and Carney all brought some extra energy off the bench and proved crucial to Sydney's push for an equaliser.

  • Lawrence Thomas

    Lawrence Thomas

    Rating: 9/10

Stellar night in goals from the shot stopper. Helpless for the two own goals but made a number of clutch saves.

  • Stefan Nigro

    Stefan Nigro

    Rating: 5/10

An early own goal could've ruined his night but he kept his head up and didn't look out of place in a makeshift back line.

  • Thomas Deng

    Thomas Deng

    Rating: 7/10

Slotted in as a centre back for Williams and despite a few nervous moments, put in a very solid performance.

  • Jame Donachie

    James Donachie

    Rating: 6/10

Not a flawless performance but grinded it out at the back and made his presence felt.

  • Leigh Broxham

    Leigh Broxham

    Rating: 5/10

Adrian kept him busy all night with an injury-time equaliser coming down his left flank.

  • Leroy George Terry Antonis Melbourne Victory

    Terry Antonis

    Rating: 8/10

The cog in midfield for Victory and barely put a foot or ball wrong before injury-time heartbreak with the own-goal. Redeemed himself in style though with a stellar solo goal in the 117th minute.

  • Carl Valeri/Adrian Melbourne Victory/Sydney FC

    Carl Valeri

    Rating: 6/10

A no-thrills performance from the veteran.

  • Leroy George

    Leroy George

    Rating: 7/10

Energetic as ever but did lack his usual cutting edge.

  • Kosta Barbarouses

    Kosta Barbarouses

    Rating: 8/10

Hit the post before pulling Victory level. Though he faded in the second half, his first 45 minutes were very impressive.

  • Besart Berisha James Troisi Melbourne Victory

    James Troisi

    Rating: 7/10

Missed a good chance in the first half but was in the right spot to slot home Victory's second.

  • Melbourne Victory Besart Berisha

    Besart Berisha

    Rating: 7/10

Solid hold-up play and provided a classy assist for Troisi's goal. Didn't want to get subbed late in the second half but will be crucial next week.

  • Melbourne Victory subs

    Ratings: 6/10

Athiu, Theoharous and Sanchez all weren't as effective as their Sydney FC counterparts but didn't really put a foot wrong either.
