Masandawana's fringe players caught the eye as the Tshwane giants edged out the Natal Rich Boyz in a five-goal thriller.

Mamelodi Sundowns claimed a 3-2 win over Richards Bay in Tuesday night's Nedbank Cup Last 32 match in Tshwane.

Coach Rhulani Mokwena gave some of his fringe players a chance to showcase their talent and Sipho Mbule was among those who impressed on the night.

GOAL rated the performances of the Masandawana players.

  • Denis Onyango MTN8 final 2021

    Denis Onyango - 5/10

Disappointing night for the accomplished keeper.

Onyango never looked assured between the sticks - giving away a penalty which was converted by Nkanyiso Zungu. He should have saved Katlego Makateng's tame long-range shot, but he slipped up and he was beaten.

  • Thapelo Morena, Mamelodi Sundowns, September 2022

    Thapelo Morena - 7/10

Spent most of his time in Richards Bay's half.

Morena's explosive runs unsettled the visitors' defence and he combined well with his teammates in the final third. Unlucky not to grab an assist when Peter Shalulile was denied from close range in the first-half.

  • Sifiso Ngobeni, Mamelodi Sundowns, January 2023

    Sifiso Ngobeni - 6/10

Managed to contain the hard-running Sanele Barns.

Ngobeni was sold defensively and he also made a few promising overlapping runs.

  • Mosa Lebusa, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2022

    Mosa Lebusa - 7/10

    An improved display.

Lebusa led by example at the heart of the Downs defence - organising and making important interceptions. He scored his ninth goal for Masandawana with a looping header.

  • Mothobi Mvala, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2022

    Mothobi Mvala - 7.5/10

Arguably Downs' best centre-back at the moment.

Mvala neutralized the towering Somila Ntsundwana. He also displayed a good range of passing including some effective switches of play to the wingers.

  • Bongani Zungu, Mamelodi Sundowns, October 2022

    Bongani Zungu - 6.5/10

Played well as a deep-lying midfielder.

Zungu made some good tackles to intercept most of the Natal Rich Boys' attacking moves. He also showed good stamina as he played 90 minutes for the first time since rejoining the club last September.

  • Sphelele Mkhulise, Mamelodi Sundowns, May 2022

    Siphelele Mkhulise - 6/10

Not at his best, but he worked hard.

Mkhulise carried the balls forward from midfield and also pressed and hurried the opposition. However, he looked tired after the restart and he was substituted.

  • Sipho Mbule, Mamelodi Sundowns, January 2023

    Sipho Mbule - 8/10

Best performance since joining Downs last winter.

Mbule displayed his usual control and advanced technique in the visitors' half. He was named Man of the Match and he will be hoping to have done enough to to start Downs' next game which is against Al Hilal on Saturday.

  • Bradley Ralani, Mamelodi Sundowns, March 2022

    Bradley Ralani - 6/10

Full of running as he looked to create chances for his teammates.

Ralani was not very effective but still played a useful role through the wings and he was substituted in the latter stages of the game.

  • Lesedi Kapinga, Mamelodi Sundowns, January 2023

    Lesedi Kapinga - 8/10

The heartbeat of Sundowns' attack on the night.

Kapinga made the hosts tick with incisive passes and sharp movement which created problems for the Richards Bay defence and he grabbed two assists.

Mokwena should be considering handing him another start against Al Hilal.

  • Peter Shalulile Mamelodi Sundowns.

    Peter Shalulile - 8/10

    Great performance.

Shalulile's unpredictable runs and good positioning unsettled the visitors' defence during his time on the pitch. He scored two well-taken goals.

  • Thabiso Kutumela, Mamelodi Sundowns, December 2021

    Thabiso Kukumela - 6/10

Injected some needed urgency and speed to the Downs which saw him force goalkeeper Salim Magoola into a fine save having been introduced in the 63rd minute.

  • Andile Jali, Mamelodi Sundowns, January 2023

    Andile Jali - 6/10

Downs regained control of the match after his introduction in the 63rd minute as he won back possession and played some accurate passes.

  • Rushine de Reuck, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2022

    Rushine de Reuck - 5.5/10

Also introduced in the 63rd minute and was hardly tested as Downs were dominating possession.

  • Rivaldo Coetzee, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2021

    Ribaldop Coetzee - 5.5/10

Showed glimpses of his good passing ability after coming on in the 79th minute - making his maiden competitive appearance of the season.

  • Aubrey Modiba, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2022

    Aubrey Modiba - N/A

Came on with five minutes left and it was too late to warrant a rating.
