Teko Modise signs for Cape Town City
The veteran midfielder’s arrival will undoubtedly add another attacking weapon to Benni McCarthy’s side, but where will he fit in at City?

Teko Modise is regarded as one of the most complete midfielders in the PSL, but his lack of game time at Mamelodi Sundowns meant he had to take a back seat.

However, very few players have overtaken him over the past two seasons, and it is for that reason the majority of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs fans wanted him at their respective clubs.

The 33-year-old could have easily chosen to return to Soweto, but a move to a new environment could help revive his career.

So where will Modise fit in at the Citizens?

He’s definitely lost some pace over the years, and his preferred position would be through the middle - either as an attacking midfielder behind the strikers or in a deeper role where he would be able to control the pace of the game.

Modise is capable of slowing down the game when the team is under pressure, and he often picks the right passes to set up his teammates in the final third.

Although it is unclear which formation Benni McCarthy would use in his debut season as head coach, a 4-2-3-1 formation would suit Modise as a central midfielder.

Modise is flexible enough though to play either on the left or right hand side of the pitch, where he would be able to use his intelligence to cut inside and garner support from the players around him.

He can cross the ball well, meaning the City will always have to make sure they are enough numbers in the box whenever Modise is in possession.

Last season, City benefit a lot from Aubrey Ngoma’s crosses on the left hand side, and with Modise now in the team, fans can expect them to be clinical in front of goal.

Modise’s biggest challenge will be to try and own that position because he has competition from Ayanda Patosi, who is equally capable of playing the same type of football.

What could work to Modise’s advantage would be the fact that he has goals in him. He can score from dead-ball situations in and around the opposition box.

He will need to perfect that piece of skill to always be in the starting line-up.

He also played alongside McCarthy in the Bafana Bafana team, which is an added advantage because the coach understands the kind of player he is and what he can offer on the pitch.

Modise's acquisition will also allow McCarthy to push Lebogang Manyama further up, knowing that he's got enough support behind him.
