Guardiola's side smashed Southampton for six and bet365 are offering a special on if the reigning champions surpass their own tally from last season

Manchester City have begun their Premier League defence in the same emphatic fashion that saw them crowned champions last term.

A six-goal display against struggling Southampton has only strengthened their position at the top of the table.

Having plundered 33 goals in the first 11 games of the season Pep Guardiola's side are on pace to break their own record for goals scored over the course of a 38-game campaign.

City hit 106 in the 2017-18 season, albeit they already had 38 strikes on the board at this stage.

At the current rate of 3.3 per match they're on pace for 125 this time around. While that rate will be tough to maintain, the bookmakers clearly feel that Guardiola's side have a solid chance of surpassing their own milestone.

The 6-1 win over the Saints was the 12th time City have scored five or more goals in the Premier League under Guardiola - no other team has done so more than six times since the Spaniard’s arrival.

bet365 offer 13/8 (2.63) that the league leaders score 107 goals this season. Alternatively, those who feel there's some regression to come and that City won't be able to better last campaign's total can get 4/9 (1.44) on 106 or fewer.

bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “Pep Guardiola’s side are clearly getting their eye in ready for next Sunday, when they face a side who have only kept one clean sheet all season – Manchester United.”

The same firm are just 4/11 (1.36) about City winning claiming three points against their rivals at the Etihad this weekend with United available at 15/2 (8.50) to inflict a shock defeat on the champions.

One key difference between the last two campaigns so far has been the defensive steel on show from the Citizens. By this stage they'd conceded seven times whereas Danny Ings' penalty at the Etihad was just the fourth time Ederson has been beaten.

While Guardiola's first Premier League title run set plenty of records, Chelsea still boast the fewest goals conceded in a season with 15 thanks to their 2004-05 campaign and that may well be beyond this current crop of players. The online bookmaker are 9/1 (10.0) about City conceding under 14.5 goals.

Just as their scoring rate is expected to drop as the hectic festive period approaches, it seems unlikely that Manchester City only concede a maximum of 10 times across the next 27 league outings.

bet365 are now 4/11 (1.36) about City retaining their Premier League title with Liverpool eased to 4/1 (5.0) after their draw with Arsenal. Chelsea (9/1) are the only other team in single figures.

The north London pair of Arsenal and Tottenham are 50/1 (51.0) apiece with Jose Mourinho's United team a distant sixth in the market at 80/1 (81.0) ahead of what looks another tough weekend for the Portuguese.
