Alvaro Morata will need to spend 10 years delivering the goods at Chelsea to get anywhere near Didier Drogba, says Frank Lampard.

The Blues have been fortunate to see many iconic strikers grace their books during the Premier League era.

Among the most prolific, and one of those held in the highest regard, is Ivorian superstar Drogba – who plundered 164 goals across two trophy-laden spells.

Morata is hoping to tread a similar path, following a £70 million summer move from Real Madrid, and has set about that task in a positive manner after netting 12 goals and providing four assists so far.

Lampard, though, admits the Spaniard has some way to go before he can claim to be as important to the cause as a forward he enjoyed many memorable triumphs alongside.

The former Blues midfielder said when pressed on what Morata can achieve: “Ask me in 10 years.

“Didier Drogba produced it for 10 years and pretty much won Chelsea the Champions League. Without him we wouldn’t have won it.

“He produced many a great moment in big games. But Morata has big potential.

“Didier Drogba is another thing but if Morata stays for 10 years, maybe he can [emulate him].”

Drogba’s enviable trophy haul with the Blues included four Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and the Champions League.

He joined the club for £24m from Marseille as part of the first Jose Mourinho revolution at Stamford Bridge and spent eight years in west London before leaving for Galatasaray.

Drogba, who is still playing for USL side Phoenix Rising at the age of 39, returned to Chelsea for a second spell in 2014-15.

Morata will be hoping to get somewhere close to matching his legendary achievements, with the 25-year-old having already tasted La Liga, Serie A and Champions League success with Real Madrid and Juventus.
