1. This is just the second time Newcastle and Southampton have met in the League Cup, with the Saints previously winning 4-1 in a third round tie in 1968-69.
2. Southampton have won just one of their last 11 meetings with Newcastle in all competitions (D3 L7), winning 2-0 at St Mary's in November 2020.
3. Newcastle won 4-1 at Southampton in the Premier League in November – the last time they won two away games against an opponent in the same season was at Hull City in 1989-90.
4. This is only Newcastle's second appearance in the League Cup semi-final – they progressed against Spurs in 1975-76, losing the first leg 1-0 and winning the second leg 3-1.
5. Southampton have progressed from two of their three League Cup semi-final ties, most recently doing so against Liverpool in the 2016-17 campaign.
6. Newcastle haven't won an away League Cup match against a Premier League opponent since October 2014, and a 2-0 win at Manchester City. However, this is only their third such match since then (0-4 v Tottenham December 2014, 1-1 v Hull November 2016).
