'Even Kenya can beat Qatar, but what is Olunga doing there?' - Fans after Ecuador World Cup win

Kenyan fans have questioned Michael Olunga's scoring abilities after hosts Qatar suffered a 2-0 defeat against Ecuador in their Group A opener of the 2022 Fifa World Cup on Sunday.

First-half goals from Enner Valencia ensured the South Americans bagged three points from the fixture at Al Bayt Stadium.

Though Kenya is not taking part in the global competition, Olunga has come into the limelight on social media following his exploits in the Qatar Stars League for Al Duhail SC.

Last season, the 28-year-old Harambee Stars captain emerged as the top scorer in the league after notching 24 goals from 20 matches. So far in this campaign, the former Gor Mahia star has scored five league goals from seven appearances.

What is more, Olunga is currently leading the domestic cup goal scorers chart with 10 goals, which comes with two hat-tricks against Al-Markhiya and Al Arabi. He also scored in four straight matches in the competition.

The display by the Maroons, who became the first host nation to lose an opening World Cup fixture, has left many fans in the East African nation questioning Olunga, with one section calling on the lanky forward to ditch Qatar league for Europe.
