Kepa Arrizabalaga (6/10):Left brutally exposed by his defence for the opener and kept his side in the contest with a string of good saves.Reece James (4/10): Offered a threat going forward, creating a great chance for Sterling during the first half, but did little to help curb the threat posed by Vinicius Junior.Wesley Fofana (3/10): The £70m centre-back was booked for a clumsy foul on Vinicius Junior inside the opening five minutes and it was a wonder that he did see a second yellow after being repeatedly torn to shreds by the Brazilian. Thiago Silva (6/10): Passed fit to play and slotted into the middle of a back three. Made some crucial blocks and one great clearance off the line but was very lucky to get a foul after being easily muscled off the ball by Benzema.Kalidou Koulibaly (6/10):The opening goal was hardly his fault but he did allow Benzema get ahead of him to reach the rebound. Was willing to step out of defence when the opportunity presented itself, while he also dealt well with the pace of Rodrygo. His injury-enforced exit was a big blow for Chelsea's hopes of escaping with a 1-0 loss.Ben Chilwell (3/10):A day after receiving a new contract, the Englishman was picked to start on the left-hand side ahead of Marc Cucurella and proved a horror show. Had been really poor in possession before being sent off for stupidly pulling back Rodrygo.

Goalkeeper & Defence

N'Golo Kante (5/10): Recalled to the starting line-up and looked like his old dynamic self early on but his influence soon faded and he was hauled off with 15 minutes remaining.Enzo Fernandez (6/10):Had a really rough spell midway through the first half as Chelsea lost their way after Benzema's goal, but was one of Chelsea's better players, though that's not saying a lot.Mateo Kovacic (5/10):Passed the ball well but this was another one of those big games where you're left wanting an awful lot more from the talented Croatian.

Midfield

Raheem Sterling (5/10):Caused Camavinga some problems during the opening quarter and would have opened the scoring were it not for a brilliant block from Militao, but he barely threatened thereafter and was rightly withdrawn shortly after the hour mark.Joao Felix (4/10):His pitiful lack of pace was exposed after being put clean through on goal early on and although he created a few more half-chances for himself before being hooked, he never looked like scoring - as usual.

Attack

Marc Cucurella (4/10):Came on for the injured Koulibaly early in the second half and was immediately caught out by a ball in behind that led to Chilwell's dismissal. Not a centre-half. And arguably not a defender either...Trevoh Chalobah (5/10): Introduced in place of Felix as Lampard looked to shore up the defence and did reasonably well in difficult circumstances. Kai Havertz (5/10): Replaced Sterling midway through the second half but made little impact, particularly after Chelsea were reduced to 10 men.Conor Gallagher (N/A):Only saw 15 minutes of action after taking over in midfield for Kante.Mason Mount (5/10): Came on for Thiago Silva and put himself about, going desperately close to pulling a goal back in injury time. Should start next week.Frank Lampard (5/10):Credit where it's due, Chelsea started brightly, looking a real threat on the break. But as soon as Madrid broke the deadlock, Lampard never looked like masterminding a comeback and his task was only made all the more difficult by Chilwell's stupidity.
