Orlando City has its second win of the season and it has Joe Bendik, the frame of the goal and Cyle Larin to thank for that.
The Canadian striker was the reason for his side’s advantage, picking up a brace sandwiched around a C.J. Sapong goal to give the Lions a 2-1 edge over the visiting Philadelphia Union.
However, with the Union pushing for an equalizer late, it came down to a bit of luck and individual brilliance to preserve the edge.
In stoppage time, Ilsinho hit a shot that got past Bendik and struck the post. The ball seemed to hug the goalline before coming out and rolling into the corner. the midfielder collected the loose ball, then slid it in to Fafa Picault, who played a floating cross into the area. Bendik came for it, but couldn’t get there. However he was able to make himself big to deny Alejandro Bedoya’s header that would have leveled the proceedings.
The Lions held on for the 2-1 win.
It was the second straight big game for Bendik, who made key stops in Orlando’s first win of the year, 1-0 over NYCFC, in the first week of the season.
Overall Orlando has won both its contests, with its Week 2 game against the New England Revolution postponed due to weather.
