Derry City captain Ryan McBride was laid to rest on Thursday, with manager Kenny Shiels delivering an emotional tribute to the late midfielder.

The Derry native was found dead at his home on Sunday, aged just 27, with the news shocking the Irish football family.

Thousands gathered for his funeral in Derry, with club boss Shiels reading a touching poem about the midfielder.

Shiels's poem praised McBride's pride in his hometown club, as well as his "trojan warrior" approach to the game, finishing with the moving couplet "In your absence we will still play the game / But in your absence, it won't be the same."

Derry's League of Ireland clash with Galway United has been postponed as a mark of respect for their former captain, while the Republic of Ireland will honour McBride before their World Cup qualifier with Wales on Friday evening.
