Mamelodi Sundowns full-back Thapelo Morena has been a shining light this season which saw him recently earn a call-up to the national team for the clash against Seychelles, only to later be withdrawn due to injury.
Morena has since bounced back and is once again amongst the mix at Chloorkop as he was part of the squad which suffered defeat to Baroka, exiting the Telkom Knockout at the quarterfinal stage this past weekend.
Nonetheless, after making such a quick recovery, Morena has credited the role Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane and his technical team played in keeping him focused.
“Firstly, I’d like to thank the coach and the technical team because they are the ones that put my mind in the right space,” Morena was quoted as saying by IOL.
“I think I’ve been doing really well during rehab, and that enhanced my early recovery. Rehab is very important for a player. And that makes it easier to quickly come back,” he added.
Meanwhile, joining a club such as Sundowns has come with its own demands. Morena started out as a winger but was transformed into a formidable wing-back where he has made the right-back spot his own.
“Under coach Ernst Middendorp at Celtic, I played as a right-back,” Morena explained.
“However, coming to Sundowns and playing as a wing-back shows that I can play and adapt in various positions. I knew (coming here) I’d be able to face whatever situation, but I’ll have to work hard,” he concluded.
Morena has appeared in five of Sundowns’ Premier Soccer League encounters this season, and he has opportunity to help the Tshwane giants climb up the PSL table on Wednesday as they host Free State Stars at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Masandawana have an opportunity to move up into the top four following their slow start to the season.
