Chippa United have officially completed the signing of Thabo Nthethe from Mamelodi Sundowns

Reports emerged last week that the veteran defender would be heading to the Port Elizabeth-based club for the upcoming season, but at the time, the Chilli Boys couldn't deny or confirm the news when contacted by Goal

However, Chippa's Lukhanyo Mzizi confirmed the news to the SABCSport on Monday night.

"We have signed Thabo Nthethe from Sundowns. He's our player now. He's very excited to be coming to the Port Elizabeth," Mzizi told the public broadcaster.

Nthethe is believed to have signed a one-year deal with an option to renew for another year.

The 33-year-old leaves the Brazilians on the back of a mere two appearances in all competitions in the previous campaign.

He fell out of favour two seasons ago following the arrival of Ricardo Nascimento and Bangaly Soumahoro.

Things went from bad to worse for Nthethe upon Motjeka Madisha's promotion to the first team, and he often had to settle for a place on the bench under the tutelage of Pitso Mosimane.

Nthethe won several major trophies with the Tshwane giants, including the 2016 Caf Champions League, 2017 Caf Super Cup, the Telkom Knockout Cup as well as three league titles.

During his three-and-a-half-year stay with Sundowns, Nthethe made 112 appearances and scored nine goals.

He is likely to partner James Okwuosa in the centre of Chippa's defence next season, and given the two players' experience, the club fans can expect a solid back four.

Nthethe was also linked with a possible move to Cape Town City who recently lost the services of Robyn Johannes to Bidvest Wits.

However, Chippa boss Siviwe Mpengesi moved swiftly to offer the former Bloemfontein Celtic skipper the deal he couldn't refuse.

Nthethe is the second high-profile player to join Chippa United after Gift Motupa, who sealed his move to Port Elizabeth three weeks ago from Orlando Pirates following a successful loan spell with Baroka

Chippa also added Boikanyo Komane from Royal Eagles, Ntuxeko Ndlovu and Lucky Setelele from Cape Town All Stars to their roster for next season.
