SportPesa cancel all sponsorships deals in Kenya

AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia chances of taking part in the 2018 Continental championships now hangs in the balance after Kenya's top clubs lost their sponsorship deals with SportPesa.

The online gaming company withdrew all sports sponsorship following a tussle with the government over 35% corporate tax imposed by the Kenyan government on gaming income.

“Effective immediately, SportPesa has withdrawn all their sponsorship commitments having lost the case against the government proposed tax. SportPesa, will, however, continue their operations in Kenya,” SportPesa CEO, Ronald Karauri said.

The latest move now leaves Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards with less than 35 days to look for an alternative source of income before the continental games kick off early February.

Kenyan champions, Gor Mahia will take part in the Caf champions League starting February 9 while GOtv  Shield winners, Leopards will kick off their Caf Confederation Cup in March.

Gor Mahia are expected to take on Equatorial Guinea side, Leones Vegetarianos in the first round of preliminary matches between February 9-11.

AFC Leopards, on the other hand, will host Fosa Juniors from Madagascar in the preliminary round of Caf Confederation Cup.

Other than the two clubs, other affected entities are Football Kenya Federation in the paying of Harambee Stars coach and Technical Director, Kenyan Premier League (KPL), national Rugby 15s and 7s, rally driver Leo Varese and grassroots football league, Super 8.
