'Sane plays like he's standing in a village square' - Ziege hits out at Man City star

The 46-year-old former Germany international said he needs to see more from the winger

Former Germany international Christian Ziege has taken aim at Leroy Sane, saying the winger is too lackadaisical and at times plays like he's "standing in a village square".

Sane played in both of Germany's Nations League defeats this international window, coming off the bench in Saturday's 3-0 loss to the Netherlands and starting in Tuesday's 2-1 setback to France.

The pair of losses continued an awful 2018 for Germany, who have now lost six matches in a calendar year for the first time in their history.

Sane was controversially omitted from his country's 2018 World Cup roster, with the defending champions shockingly crashing out in the group stage.

Though Sane is now back in the fold, Ziege, who played for Tottenham and Liverpool among other sides during his playing career, still wants to see more from the Man City star.

"Of course he has pace, of course he has quality ... You can see that," Ziege told Kicker before launching into his criticism of Sane's demeanor.

"You have the feeling he is standing somewhere on the village square," Ziege said.

"You play against the world champions and you have no time. He has to show more."

Sane played 75 minutes against France on Tuesday, three days after he and Bayer Leverkusen youngster Julian Brandt missed presentable chances against the Netherlands when coming off the bench.

"The young Leroy Sane and Julian Brandt were a breath of fresh air, but they missed a couple of good chances, maybe because of their inexperience," Germany manager Joachim Low said after his side fell to the Dutch at Amsterdam Arena.

"They need time to develop. We are still searching to set up a good balance between the experienced players and the young players."
