The Buccaneers have opened talks with the 28-year-old’s representatives ahead of the 2018/19 season

Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Orlando Pirates are edging closer to signing outgoing Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo.

The highly-rated shot-stopper, who is set to leave Chiefs at the end of the month when his contract expires, has attracted interest from Pirates and their Tshwane rivals Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of the July-August transfer window.

This was recently confirmed by Khuzwayo’s agent Tim Sukazi, who stated that the Buccaneers are going head-to-head with reigning PSL champions, Sundowns, for his client’s services.

Quality Talent Sports chief executive officer Sukazi has since disclosed that Pirates are leading the race for the former AmaZulu FC keeper’s signature.

"The negotiations with Pirates are promising. We also think he will fit in there. The fans also want him at Pirates so it looks promising," Sukazi told IOL.

Khuzwayo decided to leave Amakhosi having played second fiddle to Itumeleng Khune for much of his time at Chiefs since joining the Soweto giants prior to the start of the 2012/13 campaign.

If the former South Africa under-23 international finalises his move to Pirates, he will compete with Siyabonga Mpontshane, Jackson Mabokgwane and Wayne Sandilands for the No.1 jersey.

Khuzwayo will follow in the footsteps of current Bidvest Wits striker Lehlohonolo Majoro, who joined the Buccaneers directly from Amakhosi midway through the 2013/14 season.

Majoro remains the last player to leave Chiefs for Pirates where he won the 2014 Nedbank Cup, before leaving the Soweto giants for Cape Town City in 2016.

Pirates are known to have signed the likes of Kudakwashe Mahachi, Paseka Mako, and Meshack Maphungule, who joined the club from Sundowns, Chippa United, and Black Leopards respectively.

The four-time PSL champions have also been linked with Wits winger Vincent Pule, Sundowns defender-come-midfielder Asavela Mbekile and Chippa attacker Linda Mntambo.

Bucs are beefing up their squad as they prepare for the 2018/19 season which will see them participate in the PSL, MTN8 Cup, Telkom Knockout Cup, Caf Champions League and Nedbank Cup.
