Despite seeing his charges beaten 2-1 by Melaka United in their Super League match on Wednesday, Selangor head coach Maniam Pachaiappan insisted that his men had played well.
In the match that was held at the Hang Jebat Stadium, the hosts led 2-0 at the halftime whistle through goals by Jasmin Mecinovic and Marko Simic, and although Rufino Segovia pulled one back for the visitors 12 minutes into the second half, the visitors failed to find the equaliser.
The defeat was their fifth straight defeat in all competitions, equaling the poor streak they went through back in 2006.
"In the first half we conceded two soft goals and we tried coming back in the second. We created many chances but failed to find the second goal.
"We controlled the momentum of the game and possession, but we lacked the finishing. If our finishing had been better, we would have won the match.
"But I must also congratulate Melaka, for their success of staying in the Super League for another season," said Maniam when interviewed by the match broadcaster following the match.
With the final round of the league only going to be played in late October, the former Selangor player now hopes that he can used the long gap to work on his men's morale.
"We now have a one-month break in competitive matches, we can use the time to work on our weaknesses.
"The players can now concentrate 100 per cent on training," he remarked.
Selangor's final league match will be an away encounter to Pulau Pinang, who have already been relegated.
